Vroom Vrrrooooom! (race car bed) #1: Aaaaand they're off!

625 days ago by Allen | 7 comments »

My son Sam, now 2 ½, is a certified car nut. He has about 200 of them, which he can identify by model and color, and those are just the Hotwheels/Matchbox sized cars. He and I spend hours on the living room rug playing with cars, driving them to various locations on the rug which he has identified as the grocery store, the car wash, the “whippy dip” (does anyone outside of Cincinnati call a dairy bar/soft-serve ice cream place a “whippy dip”?) etc. Anyhow, we were sitting at dinner, my...

"PROVIDERE" --by RusticWoodArt #6: Providere's Leg Update....

625 days ago by frank | 5 comments »

Providere’s Leg Update…. ....and then some! Well this past week has been a busy one for me around here. Started out with a storm on Monday and then we lost power, so the sump pump in the cellar went down and the water level went up….up….and up. Time to break out the gasoline pump and start pumping, old connected cape houses (1778), old dug cellars and bad grading can sure be a problem at times in the spring. What with water run off from spring rains and mud seaso...

Thorsen Table contest #3: getting started

625 days ago by scottb | 17 comments »

One of my first ideas for this challenge was to make a “green” table – as in recycled, not painted. After weeks of pondering, and ultimately ignoring the problem of where to begin, and more importantly, what to use, I remembered that I had this door sitting in my shed. It may have been original to the house, but has been collecting dust for the past 5 or so years since we bought the house and replaced the exterior doors – this one had dog door cut out of it and was ...

A Beginner's Progress #1: The First Cuts

626 days ago by jstewart | 4 comments »

I made my first cuts with my new table saw today. I had no particular need to cut any wood. I just really couldn’t wait. I grabbed an old piece of scrap 3/4” pine that I had laying around from a little project I did a couple of years ago. I put on my eye and ear protection, grabbed my push stick, and plugged in the saw. (As always, safety first.) I started it up and pushed the board through. I only have a 1.5 HP saw, but it cut through the pine like a warm knife through but...

General Topics #5: I got a 'Commission'

626 days ago by Jeff | 8 comments »

I got my first ‘commission’ a few days ago. I occasionally play golf with a friend, Dan, who has just moved into a new place and has inherited an older 50” big screen. Over a post-round beer, he mentioned he needs a sturdy stand and asked me how the woodworking skills were coming along and if I might be interested… We chatted, made a sketch on a napkin, and now I’m working on some designs in SketchUp. He’s getting a ‘bargain’ cuz he’s a...

Handplane Restoration #10: Stanley Bailey #3 Type 10 After

626 days ago by WayneC | 16 comments »

I finished up the restoration work on the #3 I have been working on. Things have been going slow due to work and family commitments. I thought I would get the blog entry done this morning before heading out to the woodworking show. I’m taking my daughter and her boyfriend. It should be a lot of fun. I also picked up a couple of items yesterday. My mother-in-law as been wanting a workbench for a while and I found one on craigslist yesterday. I love craigslist. The photos of the ...

A Galoot Prepares #4: Of Ring Counts and Mortises

626 days ago by photonic | 4 comments »

After the last setback I started to figure out what I could do to correct the problem. I had visions of a three legged saw bench for a while, until my daughter saw my plans and proclaimed them “silly”. Dad can’t have a “silly” sawbench, it just doesn’t work. I went down to Lowes for a 2X4 to make legs for my bench. There were only about ten in the pile so I was sure I wouldn’t find a good one. After looking at and rejecting several I found the p...

Workshop in Progress #1: My Table Saw is Finally Alive

626 days ago by jstewart | 13 comments »

I’m just getting started in woodworking, so I bought a table saw. I purchased a Delta 10” Contractor’s Saw. When I finally got it (4 weeks after the order went to Delta), it was missing a bunch of hardware. I tried to remedy this through Delta, but I was told the “parts” wouldn’t be available until late May. (I originally ordered my saw in early February.) After getting that horrible response, followed by a real lack of concern on Delta’s (or the...

a day at the woodworking auction

626 days ago by dennis mitchell | 10 comments »

About 10 or 11, I got my first “real” job. My grandfather had an auction house. All types of strange and wonderful objects passed through there. Lots of strange and wonderful people found their way their too. I was always on the end of a sofa or moving a box. I did a mans work…well kinda. I have pretty much stayed away from auctions most my life simply because I don’t need more junk. Today I made an exception. A local cabinet maker was “downsizing”. I was h...
