Getting back to the shop #4: Making a Rustic Clock

524 days ago by Dick Cain | 10 comments »

On #3 of this series I flattened out a slice from a Birch stump. I went on & completed the job today. I also added it to My Projects. The size is about 25” x 20’ x 2 1/2” , & it weighs about 20 pounds. I made the motor cavity larger to lighten it up a little. _The other day I routed out the backside for the clock motor. I checked out the motor installation. Carved some numbers on the face. I carved a Maple leaf for the pendulum weight. I hung the clock...

Table Challenge #4: Shapely Legs

524 days ago by MsDebbieP | 13 comments »

My legs are starting to take shape. Rick and I raided the neighbour’s wood pile, or I should say selected a piece of wood after getting permission, and I now have a piece of wood that might be used for the legs. The wood is long enough and hopefully wide enough to do the trick. Type of wood: raided .. I mean… scavenged… I mean.. it’s a piece of firewood. Table Progress:Table top: check4 Aprons: checkLegs: in the making (hopefully)Shelf: still to be envi...

Our Shop #5: Heritage

524 days ago by MsDebbieP | 16 comments »

This morning, as I wrestled with my next step on my Challenge Table, I decided to stall for time by taking some pictures of some family heritage items. 1. This …. “thingy” is from my Great-grandfather’s farm. I know what it is used for but not what it is called. I found it while taking some barnboards off a shed that is going to be taken down. The shed is currently storage of “junk” (I say lightly). Amongst the items that will make their way to the garba...

"Having Fun With Green and Green" --by RusticWoodArt

524 days ago by frank | 8 comments »

”Having Fun With Green and Green” ....word playing-wood playing, while busily slaying the bark off some wood that has not yet turned off it’s drying time, and so i spend some out in the sun time at removing an outer layer, as all the while i am imagining what these are yet to be…. ....and so the ongoing story of ‘wood art’ continues…. Spent the afternoon on Sunday out behind my barn debarking some willow, maple and oak pieces of wood from the...

My Sister's Desk - a Woodworking Saga

525 days ago by cheller | 2 comments »

I started to add this as a project and then realized that it was really more of a blog entry because of the back story. My sister asked her to make this desk for her when I was unemployed (1993). She paid me for it, although when it all comes down to it I probably made less then 25 cents an hour. The design is original and is, as it should be, based on her requirements. I spent several weeks seeking out and examining plans for standing desks, captains desks and the like before I put pe...

Another Day in the shop…..

525 days ago by Greg3G | 5 comments »

NOTE. The following story contains graphic descriptions that could be disturbing to some people. Be prepared to avert your eyes should you begin to be offended.A short while ago, I had an upsetting experience that raised a question that I really need answered. The other day, while I was in my shop testing the fit of a dado joint, I got the mother of all slivers stuck in the fat part of my thumb, so I went to the first-aid kit to get a tweezers. Well, when I started to dig around for the s...

Wall Cabinet #1: Door Progress

525 days ago by cheller | 2 comments »

I didn’t have much time in the shop this weekend. We’re getting ready for our Passover seder and my college softball team had a double header today, and I couldn’t resist spending a little time in the sun. In the shop I worked on the sizing the strips which will hold the panels in the doors of the wall cabinet (see project posting). The doors have a rabbet that runs around the inside of the door to hold the panel. To hold the panel from the back I’m using strips...

Thorsen Challenge #2: Cutting and Dryfitting

525 days ago by shack | 1 comment »

Well I finished running my wood thru my planer yeasterday and started glueing it up. I have enough material ready to make about 3 or 4 of these tables. Today I started cutting out the pieces and glueing up some more stock. I was able to dry fit the base for one table. I thought I had figured out how I was gonna dress them up. But as I was working several Ideals came to me so I have not decided which way I will use. I may do more than one and emblish them differently. Tomorrow I will try...
