Dear Santa

472 days ago by scottb | 12 comments »

So my wife is letting me ask Santa for a mini/midi lathe this Christmas! I get to graduate from the less than perfect setup (but great capacity) of my shopsmith. I’ve started scouting for deals, but I’ll still have to wait for my new toy no matter when it arrives. ;( After several magazine articles over the past several months or so, I’ve had my eye on the 10x14 Jet, and the slightly greater capacity 12x16 Rikon. Should I keep debating, variable speed capability vs cap...

"Slabbin' at Wood" #2: "McCulloch Super 33" --by RusticWoodArt

472 days ago by frank | 2 comments »

McCulloch Super 33 In writing this story about “Slabbin’ at Wood’, I have thought to include stories on: 1. Safety a) ....and you will hear me talking off safety till you probably get sick of the ‘safety’ word. However with and when working with chainsaws, I am a believer that safety first on the job, will likewise take you home safely at last! b) ....I was also taught that the average audience when being talked to will need to hear the point you are m...

Custom Dishwasher Panel Progress #5: Domino-ed breadboards

472 days ago by gizmodyne | 10 comments »

DominoThis is only my second project using the domino. This time I set the fence on top of the workpiece instead of setting both on the work surface. I was trying to center the tenon. It worked, but I am not sure if I mastered the technique since some of the parts are not perfectly flush. Possibly I rocked it on the narrow breadboards. I should have put a support piece behind the work piece. It is only a hair from flush though. I set the domino for exact width cuts (8×50mm dominos...

A Beginner's Progress #4: Fun with a Dado Blade

473 days ago by jstewart | 5 comments »

Today I made more progress in learning woodworking. I ran to Woodcraft and picked up a zero-clearance insert for my table saw. I installed a Freud SD208 dado blade, 3/4” wide. I installed the insert, adjusting the fit using all of the set screws on the top, front and side. Once the insert fit snuggly, I clamped a 2”x4” across the top, from side to side. (I tried clamping it from front to back but the saw motor and fence rails made it harder to do it that way.) I turned...

Bungalow Style Bar Cabinet #1: Initial design.

473 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

New old spaceThe screen porch was occupied previously by disgusting laundry equipment We cleaned out the space: Now the whole space is stripped, stained, and lacquered. I put a new HVAC vent in the floor. This it will fit into the baseboard but it does constrain the project somewhat. I have already purchased a nickel sink, water filter system, and faucet. Just need to build the cabinet. I set out some old doors and extra panels to feel the dimensions. Initial Design Here i...

Patio Table #2: More Challenges

473 days ago by shaun | 2 comments »

Im going to try and post as much detail as I can with the pictures looking for opinions and ideas as to what I could have done better so feel free to fire away. If anybody sees any fatal flaws please point them out now. I did some quick math and figured I’d need about 32bf (leaving room for errors) of 4/4 rough sawn and came home with this pile of S1. The top had to be in four sections with the direction of the slats alternating from one section to the next and there had to be at ...

Patio Table #1: Getting Started

473 days ago by shaun | 1 comment »

This project started out as a conversation with a co-worker who was shopping for patio furniture. They found a web site with a set that they really liked but were having a hard time comming to terms with the $2,800 (plus shipping) price tag. I was a little curious to see what a $3K patio set looked like so we logged on to the web site. I was expecting to see a huge set with seating for 8, reclining chairs, lots of accessories included, awnings, and maybe a built in TV. What I saw was a 4 ft ...
