Save The Children #1: The Skateboard

469 days ago by MsDebbieP | 14 comments »

Having the pleasure of building at skateboard deck at Roarockit, with Ted and Norah, was just the beginning of my journey with the “Save the Children” challenge. My pleasure turned to great joy when my son was fascinated by the skateboard deck and it became his birthday present. His request for artwork was the logo of the company he works for, and nothing else. The addition of “the wolf” would be the only other design on the board. As we discussed the design it c...

Dreaming of Festools

470 days ago by Bill | 10 comments »

Ok, so I am doing my normal perusing of woodworking tools, and I find that Woodcraft is having a Festool give away. Then I get to day dreaming, imagining what I could make with a MFT, or a TS55EQ circular saw, or even a plunge router. Then I realize I better enter before the contest is over. For the Festoolians out there, here is the link to the Festool giveaway. I am still watching The Woodwhisperer for the next Festool giveaway there as well. Imagine, a shop full of Festools. O...

"Colors of a Walkabout" --by RusticWoodArt

470 days ago by frank | 5 comments »

Colors of a Walkabout ....okay, lets take some time out today, and get away, into the forest of green wooden inlay…. So today we are going to slip away from chainsaws and slabbin’ at wood, where in order to stay sharp, I’ve decided to go on a ‘walkabout’. Grab your hiking boots and we’ll pick up a stout walking stick along the way, leave your cares back at my doorstep, while we pass the time of day with the beauty of wood. Greenest of greens overwhel...

First Commissioned Piece #3: Keyed miters

470 days ago by Red Headed Merganser | 7 comments »

The box so far:- I’ve dimensioned the lumber and cut the miters- I cut the lid and bottom panels to size, cut rabbets into the lid, and glued suede cloth to the inside of the bottom panel and veneered a piece of white oak to the outside of the bottom panel- I inlaid the bog oak square and cut the oval for the red jasper cab- I glued up the box That takes us to this… You can see some of the nail and worm holes in the sides and lid; I could have left that out of the design, bu...

Oak Workbench #5: Finishing the Base

470 days ago by MattD | 5 comments »

The base is completed. This is way beyond the weekend project I planned. Now I’m thinking about a finish for the base. I originally planned on painting it a solid color with an exterior oil paint, but the douglass fir looks good to me (my wife thinks so too), so I might just do a BLO/turp finish on that also. The base was made from two 2×12x12 douglass fir. For the legs, I face glued three 2”x5”x35” boards together leaving space in the middle section to crea...

First Commissioned Piece #2: Status Update

470 days ago by Red Headed Merganser | 2 comments »

Ok, why is it so difficult for me to remember my camera when I’m working on this thing? Last night I was taking the clamp (large rubber band clamp) and tape (blue painter’s tape) off of my box, and I realized I hadn’t been taking ANY pictures as I originally planned on doing. The problem is that I’ll just get a free hour or two to work on it, so I’m more concerned with actually getting an hour’s worth of work done and less concerned with trying to remem...

Inspired by Frank

471 days ago by MsDebbieP | 12 comments »

Yesterday, I was outside enjoying the “perfect” weather and taking some pictures of flowers, when I sat down on a log by the woodpile to see what I could see…. I saw several images in the ends of the wood, including this one: and then I added a flower from one of the plants nearby: and finally sauntered off to find some other inspirations, including my new rock sculpture I put together:
