George W. Hart: Polyhedrality in wood or why did I hate math so much in 10th grade?

789 days ago by BarryW | 2 comments »

If you don’t know the work of George W. Hart…you’re missing some astounding creations in wood and other media. Since a man’s work ought to speak for itself, I intend to let it do just that. So visit this website and dream a little more about what you could do with wood.

The Never Ending Bedroom Furniture Project #3: The Toils of Living in Germany

789 days ago by Muzhik | 3 comments »

Part 3: Build your own furniture and save money – pause – NOT! Am I the only one that convinced myself building my own furniture would save money? Maybe I knew all along that isn’t exactly true, but it helps convince the wife that it’s a good idea. Who’s with me? We all know from experience that this isn’t a cheap hobby. I usually spend more on wood alone – not to mention new tools – than it would cost to buy whatever I’m building. In the end, it’s about the...

The Never Ending Bedroom Furniture Project #2: Design Evolution

790 days ago by Muzhik | 3 comments »

These first few entries are going to come along quickly since I’m already halfway through building the bed. Is it proper blog etiquette to blog “after the fact?” Part 2: Design Evolution As the years passed and I got closer to the actual build, I was constantly reevaluating the design in my head and talking to my wife once in awhile about my thoughts. She is the best kind of customer in that she gives me a fair amount of freedom with my designs. If I ever go into business as a woodw...

The Never Ending Bedroom Furniture Project #1: The Idea is Born

790 days ago by Muzhik | 3 comments »

Welcome to my first ever blog. As this develops, please let me know how I could make it better or more interesting. I can be wordy at times, so let me know if you don’t want to read as much about such a mundane subject as building a bed. Part 1: The Idea is Born The first part of my process for building any furniture for my own home is by far the longest. I have had designs floating around in my head for five years on this bed – just refining them here and there – once in awhi...

Fallingwater Dining Table

790 days ago by kevin | 12 comments »

When it was time to design my table, there was only one choice for the inspiration. As a graduate of architectural design, I’ve always been fascinated with Frank Lloyd Wright. I spent a lot of time with my nose buried in books about “Fallingwater”, his masterpiece. Then I went there…. It was amazing! The entire house seems to have grown from the rock all on it’s own. I returned from the trip and wrote my final paper on Fallingwater. Since then I...

Updating my mini-lathe

790 days ago by Sawdust2 | 7 comments »

Going back a week or so I posted that I wanted to make my old Carba-Tec a variable speed lathe.I had contacted the manufacturer and they confirmed that to upgrade with a new motor would cost more and be less efficient than a new lathe.Another LJ pointed me to eBay where someone sold a variable speed device for between $19-24 plus shipping.Rockler wanted $34.98 for its variable speed plug. The old motor was 1/6 hp, 2.5 amps, 1725 rpm and 25 years old. So this is what my old buddy looked like...

Finally, They Are Going In....

790 days ago by RobH | 5 comments »

In my last post I said I could see the light at the end of the tunnel with this bookshelf commission and that I hoped it was not a freight train. Well, last night I was beginning to think it was. The woman building the house that the shelves are going into came to visit her daughter this weekend. She came over to see the house and was looking over the bookshelves really good. Finally, she raised her hand, knocked on the back of the shelf and said “That is not oak.” I replied,...

Workshop in Progress #2: Garage Cabinets Inspired by Norm

790 days ago by jstewart | 3 comments »

I’m putting together some garage cabinets based on the ones Norm built in the “Garage Workshop” episode from quite a while back. This is the first time I’ve ever done anything involving a carcase. It’s also the first time I’ve done a project involving dadoes and rabbets on the table saw. So far I think it’s going well. To go along with those firsts, it’s the first time I’ve been able to put my new air compressor and brad nailer to work...
