Seeking advice on Floating Panel Box Tops ???

444 days ago by Blake | 4 comments »

I have never quite been sure what the rule of thumb is for floating panels in box tops. I am relying on some of you seasoned folks on this one. I know there are a lot of different opinions on the application of floating panels. When is it necessary? When is it not? Are there certain sizes, widths, woods, or thicknesses that you can get away with without floating the panel? I have not made enough boxes to know from experience. As you can tell from my projects, I pretty much try something...

"Live in the woods....Wood Art" --by RusticWoodArt

445 days ago by frank | 2 comments »

Live in the woods….Wood Art Well here we go….while out last Saturday working in the woods, I happened to be down in a place that does not get into my normal forest travels. I was down in this area last fall cutting trees for this winter’s burning and happened to be down here not long ago looking at some trees that had recently fallen, due to storm winds. Last Saturday was spent cleaning those trees up and while on a break that morning, I decided to waunder around. Foun...

One down and two days until we start all over again (I really need to start planning for the retirement date).Youngest son stopped yesterday to show me the updates on his off road jeep, man, the money he has in that thing would buy enough toys to put me in a shop fit for retirement. Oh well, he likes it and it keeps him off the streets.

Just thought I’d throw this out there:PlansNow.Com released a PDF document today on a technique to build up composite crown molding. Makes it very easy to see how such a beautiful result is achieved. They usually release one technique article and one free plan per week to their email newsletter subscribers, such as last week’s 15 tips for sanding success.

Entertainment Center #2: Building and Installing the carcasses

446 days ago by Fireball | 2 comments »

Building and installing the carcasses was pretty straightforward. I enjoy not having a specific plan to work from as it allows you to change things up and continue designing while you build. The picture below shows the big center unit completed. I built it first with a solid back, then realized that it would work better with a false back behind the TV so all the wires could be hidden but still easily accessed. In this next photo you can see one of the 2 boxes that will flank the...

traditional woodworking tools of Japan #1: "kebiki" -- AKA The Double Marking Gauge

446 days ago by Jojo | 12 comments »

This is the first post of a new series about the traditional woodworking tools of Japan. Don’t expect them to be thoroughly reviewed here. I just want you to meet them and get to know different ways of doing the same things. ... ”Kebiki” is today’s tool. It is a simple yet smart marking gauge. Instead of a single pin it uses two discrete well sharpened knives that tear the wood fibers very neatly. .. Both knives slide inside a routed channel that ensu...
