LumberJocks.com #3: Plans for Next Year

444 days ago by MsDebbieP | 4 comments »

Betsy has asked if anyone is interested in having a picnic in the Texas area. I have added the request in the next eMag issue and while I was writing about it, I thought it would be great if we could start the discussion about ANY picnic that might take place next year. If you are interested in participating in or hosting a LumberJocks’ picnic in your part of the world, let me know and I’ll add it to the list in the November eMag. It’s not too early to start planning &...

Project - Lever-Action Boxes #2: Milling the lumber

444 days ago by Dekker | 7 comments »

So I have started on my box project! I had originally wanted to start with a similar design as Douglas’s box (see his project), however I wanted something even easier to start back into woodworking with. So I chose this simple design, featuring a flush lid that is opened by a bit of lever action when an end is pressed down. Of course, all good things start with a plan… Since I no longer had access to any cutlist software, and since this is a simple 6-sided box, I tried a f...

Reviews - Tools #1: Delta Shopmaster Bandsaw - SM400 - A Budget Bandsaw

444 days ago by Dekker | 2 comments »

So I finally made an excuse to buy a new tool – a bandsaw to be precise. The problem is that I can not foresee a need for a heavy-duty model, nor can I justify its expense at this time. For that money, I could simply ask my wood supplier to resaw it for me for a few bucks. I went to my local BORG and could only find mid-priced models, $400-800. This was more than I was willing to spend. Then I went to Canadian Tire, since there is currently a 1/3 off sale (thanks MsDebbieP for pointi...

Early Sunday morn

444 days ago by brad | 7 comments »

LuLu and my little buddy molly are sound asleep. Molly has been up, went outside and took care of her early morning chores, had her breakfast and has burrowed under the covers with LuLu. As for me, I’m having my coffee and yielding to the temptation once again to come here and try and saturate my brain with “electronic” sawdust…..I gotta’ get into the shop this afternoon, I’m having withdrawals.

Homebuilt CNC Router #1: A Journey

444 days ago by SPalm | 10 comments »

After posting my Woodworker’s CNC Router in the projects section, I received several requests to show how I made it. I debated whether to post something here or just send them off via a bunch of links. I decided to show you the journey that I took over several years and ended up with the machine that was posted. So here goes. Do you need one? No.Should you build one? Probably not.Have I done anything useful with it? Not really. Is it cool? Oh yeah. In 2004 I stumbled on an Inte...

Seeking advice on Floating Panel Box Tops ???

444 days ago by Blake | 4 comments »

I have never quite been sure what the rule of thumb is for floating panels in box tops. I am relying on some of you seasoned folks on this one. I know there are a lot of different opinions on the application of floating panels. When is it necessary? When is it not? Are there certain sizes, widths, woods, or thicknesses that you can get away with without floating the panel? I have not made enough boxes to know from experience. As you can tell from my projects, I pretty much try something...
