I still don’t have a lathe. My Delta got a new inverter or whatever it was. It cost me 2 big ones. But that was’nt the problem. The only other thing it could be is the motor. So I’m taking that in to see if there is one left in the US I might find. Also I am watching the veneering videos by Dave to learn something new. That and my computer took a dump on me for about 3 days last week. I finally called MSN and got back online. So I missed a little bit about the gang giving ou...

The wind has calmed a bit, but I am still very much on edge. The closest fire front is southeast of me, and the prevailing wind has been ENE. Had a bit of ash, and the occasional whiff of smoke. Man, I hate that smell. My truck is packed and pointed in the right direction if I have to make a run for it. Which will be as soon as I see flames coming my way.
Thanks for your prayers- they seem to be working!Myron

It’s been almost exactly 4 years since the Paradise fire- 10/26 to be exact, and San Diego County is on fire again. We got a reverse 911 call to evacuate this morning. Packed up the kids and pets, and got my family to safety. I laid hose all around the property, and I’ve been on firewatch ever since. The family came back about an hour ago, and everything is OK so far. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather until this is over. The wind is a vicious Santa Ana. single ...

I am not going through another summer without an air conditioner in the shop. It’s not just for the coolness but also to cut down on the humidity.
I am hoping someone here can suggest a solution to the filter to keep all the sawdust out of it.
I have a dust collector which I am going to “box in” to one corner of the shop with some kind of filter for the air coming out of the “box” due to all the air being sucked in.
Second I have a dust filter/air cleane...

I don’t have access to a 24” planer or drum sander, so I figured I was on my own. Much googling later, I found the Tage Frid method for levelling a benchtop in situ with a router.
Linky
I grabbed me some cheap, but cleanly joined poplar, built out my custom rails and router sled, bought a big honking flat router bit, and set up to flatten!
I took a very thin pass across the top, just barely touching the top of the cup in the bench. This operations throws up a HUGE a...

As I have a small shop, my workbench must be my Workbench, Assembly Table, Mini Lathe Stand, Vacuum Press table, drafting table, beverage table, and much more, so I wanted to do 2 things. Get it properly flattened, trimmed out, fastened to the base, and get a good vice attached.
First, the original bench was split using a crappy circular saw, and wasn’t amazingly straight. So I set up my infeed and outfeed roller stands, lined everything up, threw in my 24T ripper, and ripped a nic...

So, way back (9 months) in my woodworking infancy, I knew little of the wonderous joys of rough lumber, jointers, and planers, so I bought the lumber for my workbench base from home depot. 1×6 maple. I dug through the pile at the borg to try and find the straightest and cleanest pieces of the lot. I thought I had done well, but I was to be stunned later.
I got it home and laid it out. Since there’s certainly no maple 2x lumber at the borg, and I didn’t think a 1x base ...

The next and final version.
I needed to address some of the problems that I noticed from before. Complexity needed to be reduced. Some of the racking and shifting needed to be addressed. I wanted to remove the concept of keeping all the skate bearings so tightly pressed against the rails. And it needed a face lift. So I came up with a new (is anything new?) design.
I kept the leadscrew and motor combination along with the torsion boxes. I got rid of the box below the gantry to ...

I actually began this project around 6-9 months ago, when I got into woodworking, and I did some of the original work then. It is surprising how far I’ve come in what I know to do, and not do, since then.
I had a leftover benchtop that I picked up basically free from family friends.
It was not pretty! It had a fairly thick finish on the top though, so with some elbow grease and some scraping, I managed to clean up the top somewhat.
There is still a 1/8th inch cup to i...
