Greetings -
I am new to LJ and also to wood working. I posted this request in the Forum section, but I’m about as green to Forums and Blogs as I am to woodworking! Since there were no responses for 4 days, I thought I might post it here. Hope this is alright with the LJ community.
Recently I bought a Craftsman 10” older contractor table saw (model 113.298034) for $50.00. I have tried the owners manual/standard method of tapping the trunion with a wood stick and hammer; I donR...

When I first started wanting to buy a router, I went out and bought some books on routers to give me an idea of what I could do with them, what to look for in a router, and also some jigs that would let me use them effectively.
Well, at the time, The New Router Handbook (Patrick Spielman, 1993, Sterling, ISBN 978-0806905181) was the book of choice that was recommended reading. I picked up a copy and was absorbed by the world of routers, what they could do, what makes a good router tabl...

It’s a great day to be alive…(I think someone wrote a song about that). It is a beautiful fall day in Missouri, I love this time of year. No “skeeters” ,no “sunburn” no “grass to mow”....LIFE IS GOOD)Trying to cultivate a habit of blogging everyday, hopefully some day I will have something of interest to say.

With blurry eyes, I made my way to the bathroom this morning but was distracted by a loud rattling sound. Taking a detour from my intended destination, I followed the sound and arrived at my daughter’s bedroom door.
“Are you stuck?” “Yes” was the reply and the frantic rattling became faster and louder. I jiggled the door knob from my side. I twisted; I pulled; I pushed. The door did not open.
“Just a minute.” .... “Rick, we need your help....

I’ve been planing to build a down-draft table for quite awhile. It’s probably as important as a dust collector for staying ahead of dust collection. Someone gave me a furnace blower that puts out a lot of air, and I’ve been planning and plotting. My big hangup has been that the filters will plug up fast and I’ll be cleaning them all the time. This weekend I cut up a bunch of MDF and was surprised to see quite a pile of MDF dust in my dust seperator. When the air an...

The fire seems to have gone south of us. I just heard that this particular fire, the Witch Creek Fire, has burned over 110,000 acres, and is zero percent contained. Escondido and Rancho Bernardo are in serious trouble.
I just went to check on the family, and everyone is just fine, except my brother-in-law, who just doesn’t do well with a lot of kids at the same time. Not to mention the 5 cats, 2 dogs, 4 cockatiels, and 1 parakeet. Oh yeah- 2 guinea pigs and a rat. The 2 pygmy goats...

I have been resisting buying a Radial Arm Saw (RAS) for at least the last year. I have a great Sliding Compound Miter Saw, Router, and Table Saw. The only operation that seemed to be quick with a RAS that I could not easily do with the tools I have is making cross cuts using a dado set.
Last week Blake posted a project where he did a wonderful job restoring a 1959 DeWalt Radial Arm Saw. I really loved the job he did. Sunday afternoon I was browsing Craigslist and saw an ad for a saw si...

I just got my newest purchase from e-bay. It’s a 5 1/4 Stanley plane. The picture was not all that accurate. I think the plane would probably end up being ok if I were a bit more mechanical.
I’m starting to convince myself that I need to stick to the new tools that I don’t have to fix (aside, of course, from lapping the sole and sharpening the cutter).
I think it could turn into a nice plane – but I’m going to have to get some help with it. It’s got a...

I still don’t have a lathe. My Delta got a new inverter or whatever it was. It cost me 2 big ones. But that was’nt the problem. The only other thing it could be is the motor. So I’m taking that in to see if there is one left in the US I might find. Also I am watching the veneering videos by Dave to learn something new. That and my computer took a dump on me for about 3 days last week. I finally called MSN and got back online. So I missed a little bit about the gang giving ou...

The wind has calmed a bit, but I am still very much on edge. The closest fire front is southeast of me, and the prevailing wind has been ENE. Had a bit of ash, and the occasional whiff of smoke. Man, I hate that smell. My truck is packed and pointed in the right direction if I have to make a run for it. Which will be as soon as I see flames coming my way.
Thanks for your prayers- they seem to be working!Myron
