This past Friday (August 31, 2007) my daughter, (our Canadian Film Crew, / chauffeur) “volunteered” to drive me to Toronto for a personal tour of Ted & Norah’s new location for their Roarockit business and skateboard school. The first part of the interview is found here
First of all, I have to say that the travel gods were with us as the trip took us less than two hours, with no traffic jams. Wow. Anyone who has driven to Toronto knows that this is not a common occu...

I’m tellin’ ya, anyone can make a cedar strip canoe. It’s hard to make an ugly one. You mix cedar, redwood and varnish and and it’s hard to go wrong.
That’s why I’m offering an affordable class this winter at our Burly Canoe shop in Duluth, MN. You get your own boat, class instruction, and 5 months of shop space to work on your canoe, all for $1600. Visit Burlycanoes.com for more details.
Last winter, a bunch of guys bought tobacco pipes and crank...

First let me apologize for the delay in getting this week’s blog out. I’ve had a pretty busy few days. This week was the Chargers last pre-season game, so I was busy with that last night. I’ve included a few shots from the game at the end of this post for those that have asked about my photography work.
On with the wood.
Perhaps the least most anticipated thing about my taking this class was the fact that there would be days that we would spend the entire 8-hours of class listening to ...

I’ve referred to using the WASP Sander in a number of my projects. It’s a great Aussie invention for woodworkers. This review from http://www.onlinetoolreviews.com/ covers all the benefits of this terrific product.

I’m on a new mission, a mission style arm chair. I had a desk chair that has fallen apart and its time for a new one. Again sticking with the Hockey Stick theme, I’ll attempt to put one together.
This is the type of chair for the starting point. I’ll get some measurements and make it completely from sticks if I can. I envision using goalie sticks for the arms, we’ll see if it works.

How does one set about becoming a craftsman? (I’ll hold off on the ideas of craft vs. art for now)
Typically, the desire to make something is within all of us. Whether it is in our DNA or just our culture, we all have creative capabilities that manifest themselves in different ways. Some paint. Some sculpt. Some of us choose wood as our medium.
I think it’s pretty common to see people approach woodworking with a “let’s see what happens” attitude. My p...

In the last installment, I showed some of the detail work involved in making the trays for my Jewelry Box.
Here I continue with the dividers that will create the lower level compartments. There are twelve components to the lower dividers. They are tedious to make requiring patience and care to keep everything square. My intention is to eventually glue this grid-work up and insert as one piece. The reason for this that the bottom of the tray will be lined with fabric. Therefore, it’s ...
