In the interest of furthering an appreciation of Geography, and all it’s nuances (Heads up, prospective Beauty Queens!) we are traveling north of Deb’s home turf to the shop of Robb. Robb is starting his third week as a Lumberjock, and extended an invitation to visit his shop. Where would it be, you ask? On some frozen tundra, near the Arctic circle? No it’s in the U.S.A., in beautiful Holland, Michigan. Robb and his wife live on a farm property and his shop space occupies a ...

I think it’s time for a new workbench. The old fold up table works ok for some things, but it’s not great for holding work flat and it’s too low.
I got a ton of short 6/4 white oak boards from a local woodworker a few weeks ago. Since then, I have been stuck with the idea of making them into a workbench top and got a start on it today.
The main features I’m planning are:
24” x 60”
2 1/2” Thick
Front and End vise
Round Dog holes
37...

It’s been a while since I posted any projects, so I figured I’d better do so before you all forget my name.
I previously posted a Library stair unit, and this table is the accompaning piece of furniture to that.
The client needed a conference table, but he also wanted a workbench, as he was prone to dismantel his computer occasionaly, in name of improving it.
He was a fan a George Nakashima, so he wanted the table fashioned in his style. My design seemed to ...

The king is dead.
A few weeks back, while we sure had some fierce gusts of wind, which caused my chess trellis to tip over.
And while the (wood only) joinery of my trellis survived the impact with the ground (rocks and/or pottery) the wood itself did not. I found everything still together, save for the King himself. I originally intended to reattach it, but had the quick inspiration… a little poetic je ne sais quoi… some sort of “art (or hidden meaning) is in the e...

Good Morning fellow LumberJocks:I had a few moments and thought I’d share a little of my blessings and delimmas with you. I’ll start with the blessing part.
Previously, I’ve mentioned the reclaimed lumber from my great grandfather’s store. I’ve got a somewhat large pile of it in my barn that’s been sitting there since the early 70’s. Back then when I was in high school, my parents took it upon themselves to tear it down and bring much of it home...

Well, some disappointment for me this week:After checking some metal heat treating companies here I find that they have (understandably) a $60.00 minimum for processing materials. The sort of leaves us little guys out unless we have a whole batch of tools to do at one time. This has never been my good fortune.
So, luckily I had a casting furnace sitting around for years with nobody asking for one so it is now pressed into service as a heat treating unit.
Showing here is the furnace with ...

No, I haven’t fallen off the planet and yes I have been working on the EC but at a more relaxed tempo. In my last blog entry things were not going well and I decided that I was burned out and trying too hard so I backed up and decided to proceed at a slower pace.
I have accomplished the glue up of the carcass, fist the ends and then the rails and floor. All went surprisingly well and I am under a 1/16th of an inch out of square diagonally, very good for me at my level of amateur status! T...

The challenge was to get these applied carvings off intact so I can apply them to the new rail:
1. I sliced the carvings and some of the wood from the old rail off with the bandsaw2. I put a big pot of water on the stove to boil with a fry pan splatter screen on top.3. I set the two carvings on the splatter screen in hopes that I could soften the glue and steam the backer wood off the carvings. After gingerly and patiently sticking a sharp pocket knive b...
