"Wood" --by RusticWoodArt

Wood ....all that secernate from wood, can not in trueness of nature act as wood, nor can it be called in the interest of wood, and so once again i go and think upon wood…. —-if one were to dwell with wood, one might in turn know the cellular being of wood, where being true to mine own nature i am gathered for wood, spewing forth great commentaries on the inclinations of wood…. —-look me in the face and see wood, hear my words and know i speak for wood, shake ...

MsDebbieP's Company Tours #13: Toronto Woodworking Machinery Expo

437 days ago by MsDebbieP | 6 comments »

Yesterday, after our bonfire breakfast (6:30 AM with our family, sitting around the fire laughing, eating), Rick and I headed to Toronto to the Woodworking Machinery and Supply Expo. Over the past year Rick and I have attended quite a few woodworking shows in the region but I have to say that none of them have been like this one. First of all we had to have a special badge to enter. At the entrance door you had to show your badge AND they had to check it with a digital thingymajiggy to che...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #11: Back to the Chests after 2 Month Diversion

437 days ago by Paul | 1 comment »

Gosh, time flies. Projects that I’ve outlined in other blogs piled up and I needed my space back to work on these chests. Didn’t get a whole heck of lot accomplished after the flea market and yard sales today. Purchased manufactured maple drawer guides. Made a mistake and left a 5/8” inset to the drawer bottoms and the guide was 3/4” high. Fortunately, I was able to take 1/16” off each half of the guide by running through my table top tickness planer to m...

Scoooore! Maple quarter log sections/bowl blanks

438 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 12 comments »

Two beauties. The fellow that had these as freebies in the front yard had both sides of the sidewalk lined with logs and log sections, with more in the back. These were the extent of what I could lift, each about 80-90 lbs. Looks to me to be rock maple. The tree he took down was three foot in diameter easily, not sure how tall it was. Thank you stranger, thank you majestic tree, sorry you had to come down. I will be reverent in handling your leavings. Where is the Cyber Bowl Blank Share condu...

Woodworking Relativity

438 days ago by miles125 | 15 comments »

Is it just me, or does anyone else have a large extended family that wants your woodworking expertise at a bargain basement cost? There are times when i envy the guy who produces the upper part of the valve stem actuator that only fit a 12 foot tall Caterpillar tire. I bet practically nobody calls a brother in law like that for a “deal”!!!! Not that i don’t enjoy making things for the family (and friends), i just can’t charge them enough. When i do, i’m likely...

Lumber Making #4: The Maple has Landed!

438 days ago by Dorje | 18 comments »

The remainder of the maple came down today and I got a shot of the main trunk section that I plan to mill. It’s definitely going to be spalted throughout. This bole is 35-40” in diameter and the arborist was able to leave it intact from base to crotch! It’s 11’ long. It’s partially cracked on the side you can’t see and does have some splitting, so it probably won’t yield wide boards. I think it is sound enough to go through with this venture. Th...

From junk to dust (part 2 1/2)

438 days ago by Dust4brains | 5 comments »

Bonjourno y’all !!!!. It’s been a couple of weeks since my last blog and there has been some progress in the garage/wood metropolis. I have cleared out half of the collectables (junk) and have been slightly distracted in a good way. I bought a benchtop style table saw based upon space and budget and have spent the last few days setting it up. It’s a long way from a ‘grown up’ table saw but it’s all mine. All mine I tell ya! :o) I carefully unpacked it...

Wood swelling #1: Exteior Redwood

438 days ago by NapaMike | 4 comments »

I am building redwood gates with floating, half lap rabbit overlaps in the vertical slats within dado slots in a rigid frame (glued) in Northern California where we get a significant change in humiditiy from dry summer & fall to wet winter. How deep do I need to make the rabbits in the vertical slats to compensate for swell from wet to dry seasons to prevent splitting the rigid gate frame? MT
