Hardwood lumber grading.

456 days ago by Karson | 7 comments »

I’ve been trying to find the formula for grading hardwood for Select and #1 Common and #2 Common. I finally found it and downloaded it to my computer. It’s here. Or e-mail me and I’ll send you a copy. I’m sure that WoodButcher has many copies all around his place, but you maybe too far to drive to pick one up.

Thorsen table challenge #3: Only three days left.....

456 days ago by barbs | 12 comments »

and Barb is finally getting serious. I’ve worked long long hours all the month of May and been meeting other deadlines as well, so, still trying to build one of my two tables to photograph! One thing I’ve wished is that I had built Christopher Shwarz’s kneeling saw bench, as I had to resaw a mahogany slab 17”x15”x2” with a handsaw after cutting all edges with the tablesaw to about 3” deep. The only way I had to hold the thing was a bench vise, which cl...

A Workbench's Progress #1: In the Beginning

457 days ago by TheGravedigger | 7 comments »

In the beginning were the catalogs, and in the catalogs were beautiful workbenches, and attached to the workbenches were not-so-beautiful prices. Is there a single one of us that has looked at a catalog and not drooled over the incredible workbenches therein? Some may have unlimited funds, but I have trouble dropping a grand on a work surface. There are too many areas that have a greater demand on my hard-earned dollars. On the other hand, trying to edge-plane a board on a 6-foot foldin...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #3: Top and Dividers Installed

457 days ago by Paul | 6 comments »

Had a little time today. I used the pocketholes and screws for the first time. Pretty neat. Think I would have needed more hands for other attachment options (dowels, bisquits). Click the pics for larger images. On to the carcase of it's twin and then . . . dovetailed drawers (another first)

Kitchen Remodel #2: Making the legs.

457 days ago by Karson | 9 comments »

Well I started the Buffet / Hutch. If I don’t get started I won’t have anything to say without getting myself in trouble, when my wife asks me what I’m making in the shop. I started out by making a full size template on plywood for all of the milling that needs to be done on the legs. Can you believe that those two templates have all of the instructions for milling 8 surfaces on the legs? Now you may ask what do you mean by 8 surfaces. This is the way that I was taught when you make ...

You know you are a US LumberJock When....

457 days ago by WayneC | 12 comments »

In response to MsDebbieP’s blog entry, I thought I would allow for some additional points and counter points to be made for the folks below and to the West of the Canadians. For example: You know your a US LumberJock when you have several Yankee like tendencies such as brad nailing everything in sight while wearing a plad flannel shirt.

You know you are a CANADIAN LumberJock When....

457 days ago by MsDebbieP | 43 comments »

I couldn’t find the discussion about Canadian Lumberjocks so I just decided to post a blog response. How can you tell a Canuck lumberjock from others around the world? Well, they don’t need power tools—they just go out into the woods (or backyard) in their red flannel jacket and beaver hat, carrying their axe and just cut what they need to get the job done! Yup.. then we ride the log down the river and finish the job. Oh.. and when you meet one… you’ll k...

Hi Folks, There have been a few new Festoolians born of the Lumberjocks crew, and as there is such a great bunch of information published on most of the Festool products, I wanted to give some links to some Domino resources. First of all, a link to bookmark is the Festool Owners Group. Here's a collection from Jerry Work. He does some very impressive work and does alot of compilation of data and howto for other Festool Products. His Domino Manual a must read. I find his stuff ...

Photos from Cuba Trip - Finally!

457 days ago by Martin Sojka | 11 comments »

We have finally selected, cropped, enhanced and uploaded some of the photos from our Cuba trip to the online photo gallery. As many of you know I was in Cuba from April 16th to May 2nd, together with my Alenka. We visited all of the 14 provinces. We had two cameras – my older one but still great Sony F717 and Alenka’s new Nikon D80. More than 1,700 photos are resting in our home computer now and we somehow we managed to choose around 700 photos to our online gallery. Enjoy t...
