Oh! My Ackey, Breakey Heart - It's firewood

431 days ago by Karson | 18 comments »

A couple of years ago my wife met a lady who lived 10 miles from us and she said her husband owned a door and window plant, and that I should go at pay him a visit. I had never done it. Since i started to assist in making the toys for Christmas from the Mason – Dixon Woodworking Club, I thought that I’d check and see if they had any scraps that we could use for toy making. I went there today. They make wooden doors and windows for Million Dollar homes and they ship all ov...

Project - Chunky Boxes #3: Milling the Lumber part 2

432 days ago by Dekker | 0 comments »

At the end of my last blog entry for this project, I had my pieces rough milled. Well, since then I have given the sides of the boxes its 30’ miter, and used my recently-tuned miter saw to cut the sides with nice clean miters. Once that was done, I needed to put the finger-hole for removing the lid onto the “front” of the box. To do this, I needed a 3/4” forstner bit, which has a nice flat bottom. To get the curve I needed, I needed to place the center of the bit 3/32&...

About Me--alanealane

432 days ago by alanealane | 11 comments »

I just edited my profile and added the following description of myself…as if anyone cares who I am anyway…sob sob. LOL I’m Alex, a 20 year old woodworking fanatic who’s affectionately called by my family the ‘Termite.’ I work at a private liberal-arts institution in my hometown as an Architectural Drafter/Designer. Another fanaticism I hold dear is that of Jazz Music. I was raised listening to the likes of David Sanborn, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Al J...

Carport project was a challenge!

432 days ago by oscorner | 9 comments »

Hello, everyone! I began this project after the first major hurricane came on the scene this year. I originally had one of those temporary structures with the pipe and tarp for a cover for my son’s car, but decided that I needed something better if it were to weather any kind of storm. It’s 12’X30’ with a two foot roof slope going from 14’ to 12’. Here’s the front: The rear: Extra overhead storage: North side: View fr...

Tools #5: Overhead Blade Guard

432 days ago by mot | 9 comments »

I’ve been meaning to blog this for awhile. I’ve gotten a few messages asking about my blade guard so I wanted to give the story. As many of us know, the blade guards that come with standard table saws are awkward to use and often get taken off and never replaced. My original motivation for the blade gaurd, however, was not safety. It was dust control. When I set up my shop in my basement, I got overhead dust filters and dust collectors with piping. After cutting with my t...

Project Status #1: 11/2/07 Update

432 days ago by booyeah | 2 comments »

My father in law will be in town this weekend, he happens to be an avid woodworker as well. Hopefully, together we can make a good dent in some of these projects! He helped me build the workbench to where it is today, so maybe he’d like to help finish it… Stay tuned for the weekend update!

Log Home Building Course #1: It's spring...

...in the southern hemisphere. The days are getting longer, the temperatures warmer, the leaves are out again and the rhodos are blooming. That means more shop time (I’ve got an unheated garage for a workshop) and more projects – I’ve got a slew in the pipeline: some pressies in the form of some small food storage containers, one of those Wood Whisperer’s boards is glued up and ready for phase 2 cutting and I’ve got a custom TV stand for a friend nearly ready fo...

Hello

432 days ago by Kip | 10 comments »

Hi, Just wanted to introduce myself to the LJ community. I’ve been following the website for 3 or 4 months now and have been impressed by the quality of the projects and the people involved. Like I stated in my profile I make my living as a firefighter and try to spend as much time as I can in the shop when I’m away from the fire station. I consider myself a “beginner” woodworker. I have no formal training to this end but grew up watching my dad almost literall...
