Project start

Aside from the table saw, the miter saw is probably the most versatile tool not only in your shop but on the trucks of carpenters around the world. The Skil miter saw that I own cuts great, keeps aligned properly without much hassle, and is rock solid. The biggest downfall is dust collection….well rather lack thereof. Just cutting out the pieces for one of Jay's Benches, left the shop covered in a layer of dust. The included bag simply does not catch a lot of the dust nor does the blade's safety/dust shroud contain it very well either.

Part 2 (and maybe 3) coming soon!

Almost there!

In part 1 I completed most of the work to build the frame and saw platform. In this second video (of three part series), I created the saw dust drawer and did some fine tuning.

I filmed the final installment this afternoon so once I get the video and article put together, I'll finish out the project for you guys. The final results really amazed me…especially this being my first real project I've shared with the world.

Complete!

In part 1 and part 2, I completed frame, saw platform, and drawer. In this final article and video (of three part series), I created the dust shroud. The amount of dust that this contains is incredible! Before, after about 10 cuts, I would be covered in dust. Now I can basically cut until my heart's content and still be able to breathe.

There is a hardwood track so you can slide the Plexiglas out to do miter and bevel cuts or remove it completely for easy cleaning. I really dreaded cutting the Plexiglas but after figuring out I could cut it on the bandsaw and using my table saw's 50T blade, it was easier to cut than plywood (don't forget those safety glasses, small chips flown EVERYWHERE).

If you have made it this far, thanks for reading all three parts!
