Woodworking Work Bench

Well, this is my version of a workbench. I have spent a few years using a ‘get by with’ workbench. During that period I have developed my style of working so I built the bench to fit me. It is 74 1/2” long, 33” wide, and 36 1/2” high.

The pedestal is made from SYP and the joinery is mortice and tenon. The top is made from two layers of 3/4” MDF with a topping of 1/4” tempered board. It is wrapped with SYP. The tempered board is removable so it can be replaced when necessary. The lower shelf is 3/4” MDF topped with 1/4” tempered board.

One vice is from Lee Valley and the other (tail vice) is from the old work bench.

Probable cost is around $200.00.

As I said I built it for me and have been using it and it is working out great.

Thanks for Looking.

Tie Down Box

I want to display the curly oak and tell a little story about it. I was at the local wood supplier in Jefferson City, Missouri named CARDWELL HARDWOODS. I was getting some poplar for various projects and noticed three boards of this curly oak in the office and was admiring them. Knowing that my funds would not allow me to purchase them I stil admired them. After paying for the poplar I went to my truck to leave and there was a 8’ long 5” wide curly oak board. Back in the office I was told that they were giving me the board so I would not drool on the other ones. The owner requested a picture of a finished project using the wood for payment. There will be a Jewelery Box for my wife displaying the wood. I made a picture frame for Cardwells as a gift.

The box is two scraps of the curly oak, some cherry scraps, and the sides are some ash scraps. Now the tie downs will not be a jumbled mess in the truck.

Sorry for the long dissertation but rarely to we come across a merchant that cares for their customers as Cardwell Hardwoods.

Another Flatwear Chest

This is a flatwear chest made for our daughter. We gave her a set of flatwear for a Christmas gift and the first respose was “Dad I now need a Chest to store it in (hint, hint).” So I got out the maple and cherry and proceeded. The material is 5/8 thick. It is 7 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 11 1/2 inches deep. The corners are 45 degree miters with dovetails insertd to help reenforce the joints. The finish is Watco natural oil and several coats of wipeon poly. The drawer is maple with maple 1/4 ply for a bottom.

The lid lift and drawer pull are shop made. The utensil holder is not. It was purchased online.

How to say this without appearing to be bragging. I am proud of this piece since it is all my own design. Five years ago I would never have dreamed this, but with the knowledge gained from this site and the encouragement given by its members causes a person to progress.

Thanks for looking.

I got this plan from a woodworking magazine. The joinery they used was pocket screws. I decided to use mortise and tenon instead( skill learning for me). The seat is shaker tape. The design in the back splat is done using a template made by Milescrafter (spirocrafter). Wood is white oak and finish is wipe on poly.
