Wall Unit Build #3: Ready for Stain

The Pieces parts are all done. The unit has been pre assembled to make sure everything works.

Start with the Sketch Up Drawing

Base

Center Cabinet

Attach the 2 end cabinets, and counter top

Put in the top panel

Set the crown on top

Hang the doors,

Next step is to take the unit apart, give it a quick once over with 220 by hand looking for any marks that may have been made during pre assembly.
Lay it out and start the staining and finishing.
I will be using Sherwin Williams wiping stain that was custom matched for color. I spray the stain and wipe as I go doing all the pcs, next I set the air pressure a little higher and lower the volume and give everything a light fog coat going around all the pcs spraying where necessary to make all the pcs consistent in color.
Next, 2 thin coats of pre-cat lacquer, sand lightly with 220, 1 more coat of reg mixed pre-cat, hit with scotch pad, 1 more coat, check for desired affect, possibly 1 final coat depending on how the last coat looks.
I will be spraying the Pre-Cat Lacquer from a pressure pot, using a Binks 2001 spray gun.

Wall Unit Build #2: Column Detail (Routing the recess)

After clamping and rough sanding the columns the next step will be to rout in the recess.
This is something that could have been done before the actual glue up, but I forgot to read the manual so it will be done as the second step.
I laid out the size of the recess and decided that building a box around the column and using my 4” base laminate router would give me the spacing that I needed.
Here’s the box with the column inside.

I started out routing all the way around the ouside.

Then went back and forth to clean out the center.

This was taking to long and leaving to many grooves in the bottom so I changed the method. I added a long pc. to the inside of the box to act as a spacer to move the bit over and then went the long direction again and it left a much cleaner bottom. (sorry, no picture of that)

Here are the finished columns, I did the same method for the small columns also.
I glued sandaper to small blocks that fit inside the recesses to sand them with.

I left the small radius on the corners for now, not sure yet if I want to square them or not.

Next series I will attach the small coulms to a finished side and will build the cabinet boxes. Not much exiting to that, so will just show pics of the cabinets with the columns attached.

Wall Unit Build #1: Building the Columns (Taping the mitre Joints)

I’m going to build a Wall Unit that will incorporate a big screen TV. I will make this Unit in sections and assemble the final product in the home. I will try to document the process and show as much as I can, I’ve never done this so have some patience and ask questions if you have any.

Here is the Sketch Up drawing of the wall Unit.

The wall unit will have 4 columns, two on the ends and two in the middle.
Here is a close up of the columns.

This first series will be about gluing up the columns
This is not a new method by any means, but I thought I would show my process for doing several miters at once.
So here is the process for making the columns.
First I cut all the miters on the pcs, I leave the pcs long and will trim then to length after there glued up.

Next step is to hold the pcs together and put tape down the seams. I like to pinch them together tight and hold in place with small pcs of tape and then double up the tape with another pc down the whole seam.

Flip the boards over and apply a good bead of glue,

Next I fold the pcs together and use tape to hold them in place.

Let dry.

Remove tape.

Hit with sander and ready to go to the next step.

Thanks for looking.

Work or Hobby?

I see a lot of very nice things here. And was wondering WHEN you do them.
I have a small cabinet shop that I do as a living and it takes all of my time just to build the custom cabinets that I build.
So, I was wondering how many of you do this for a living and then how many of you are the lucky ones that get to do this as a hobby. I love doing this as a living and if I had to pick a hobby It would still be woodworking. I’m like the mechanic that’s car doesn’t run well. lol
I envy the hobbyist that can relax in his garage and work on specialty projects.
