I build Craftsman furniture and related items. I use quartersawn white oak, white oak, red oak, and walnut exclusively. In every piece, I use walnut as an accent to the oak. This could be the slats, beauty stretchers, lower stretchers, or wherever it suits me and looks good. I take some of my designs from Stickley catalog reprints and tweak them to make them mine, but much of the time I take inspiration from the time and place and make my own designs.
I like the way the walnut sets off the oak, and usually use a light pecan stain topped with a clear satin finish. I don't use any screws or metal fasteners in my pieces, joining them using mortise and tenon joints and pegs.
My shop is 1/2 of my basement, about 1500sq.ft., and I have all the tools and machines but a lathe, which I am not really into, considering what I build.
I get most of my lumber from Pennsylvania, but would like to find a local source that had the same quality and selection. I have lived here for 3-4 years and have had no luck. Maybe here I will find some help, because shipping is killing me on prices.
I am looking forward to talking to other woodworkers across the country. This is the first time I have joined something like this.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. Check out http://www.woodfinder.com/ It may help you find some lumber suppliers that you may have over looked. I used to get good lumber at reasonable prices when these guys were in Texas.

This Iowa winter has been the worst I’ve seen. Hopefully that means we’ll have a mild summer but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. Thanks for the welcome this community seems like a great resource.

Hey thanks for the complement. I will track down the plans for them and get them to you. I might post a blog on the assembly or something. I have built so many that I have a couple of tricks that will make life a lot easier. I reccomend white oak for these chairs but that can be costly and very heavy. (But it looks so good)

Hi bbKing,
Thank you for viewing my new shop and your very encouraging complimentary. Most of us here at LJs are very kind people who understand each other. And your kind words are really the inspiring factor to me.
