More shop upgrades

First pic is my new lumber and sheet goods storage. Lumber is on some $1.79 shelf angle brackets. Should work as it is just holding my larger offcuts and left overs. As the stack grows, I will grow the storage solution. Sure better than when I had them stickered on the floor with the sheet goods leaning against the wall. Sheet goods holder I copied from here.

Who stole it from here

Second is a roll around cart for my drill press and belt/disk sander. Got the plans here
The case under the sander is my new Makita 10.8v Drill and impact driver combo that I really need to review but haven’t got around to it yet. Tomorrow I plan to build the shelved unit from shop notes for my planer and jointer. I am tired of lifting the 70lb planer up of the floor every time I want to use it. For the link to the Shop notes page I have to thank Spaids

Some shop upgrades

First pic is my dust collector for the new Rigid shop vac I just bought. Thanks to everyone who built one before me. Mine is not pretty but it works very well. After sweeping up about 7 gallons of mainly MDF dust, the filter was still very clean. Number 2 is my new drill press table, Mdf home made jobby. Third is the MDF miter sled I just made since my wife wants some picture frames made. Fourth and fifth are the trash in the collection bucket and the amount in the shop vac after the mentioned 7 gallons of junk. Last is the inbetween work bench I just built. FWW cheap type, double mdf top, bottom loaded with concrete blocks. Vise I already had, got it for $7 at a local junk dealer. Any questions or comments feel free.

Ash and Walnut w/ Walnut Ply
Each chest is 12” deep x 26 3/4” wide x 24 3/4” tall
Top is 45” x 28”
14 drawers total.
I made this for my son’s birthday. He is 6. Daughter is 13 months. Wish I would have spent a little more time on the top, and wish I had time for one more coat of poly on the drawer fronts. Drawers are solid Ash w/ 100lb full extention slides so he can see all his Lego pieces. Approx total weight is 150lbs. I hope the inspiration is obvious (Lego). Pulls have a little 1/2” cove cut in the bottom of them for finger grip. Last pic is the SketchUp rendering. If anyone would like the file PM me your email and I will gladly send it.

Tom Turkey Trophy Box

A few months a go my father-in-law wanted a box to keep his turkey beards in. He is an avid turkey hunter, and didn’t have anyplace to keep his beards. He was also worried about any insects getting to them, and eating them. It started out as he just wanted a cigar box (I smoke cigars but not ones expensive enough to come in a Spanish Cedar box lol), but here is what I came up with. White Oak sides and figured white oak top, with black walnut butterflies and more white oak “shot gun shells” Lined with aromatic cedar. Let me know what you think as this is my first box, and first time working with real wood (from rough to finished) instead of poplar or red oak from the Borg. Finish is 4 coats of wipe on poly 600 grit sanding on first coat and #0000 steel wool on the others.

Tool box for a tool box prototype

This is a prototype for a tool box I plan to build for a friend. Second time cutting dovetails. Finish right now is just one coat of wipe on poly since I still haven’t decided what to do with this little box. Here is my blog on it. Please feel free to comment on any issues you see. I know the 1/2 pins at the top are too thin, that was at least one lesson learned.

Bookcase To Match Room

Here is the bookcase that was in my very first blog entry. It was built for my son to replace his outgrown book storage (which we just moved into my 2 week old daughters room to put her books in (yes my wife is a book nut)). As the title says I made it to match the other furniture in his room, knotty pine (should be naughty pine as I will never again do a project this size with BORG deminsional lumber expecially when I need knotty pine and not #1 select). Took some time and finess but I got her done with my limited skills and tooling. Finish is a coat of BLO.
And just incase anyone was wondering it is screwed to the wall and floor. All 180 pounds of me climbed it just to make sure it wouldn’t tip over or anything.

Miter Gauge

Father’s Day present for my dad (a fellow woodworker). Made from Gord's plans out of 3/4 MDF. I used wood glue and water (1:2 mix) as a sealer and two coats of Johnson’s paste wax as a finish. Had to have the bar (alluminum) milled since my dad has a contractor saw with a unusual slot. I also gave him a 3/8” x 3/4” bar for when he gets his real saw. I will have to keep a eye on it and report back to see how the wood glue water mix does to keep the MDF strong and stable.
