New Friends in Woodworking

One thing that I have come to appreciate about my woodworking is only indirectly linked to the wood, machines, projects, techniques, etc. – you meet new people. Maybe they are woodworkers themselves or maybe they are interested in what we’re doing and how we’re going about it or maybe they are polite enough to act interested. But there is always something to talk about.
Recently I started my clinicals for emergency services and I get assigned to “ride” with an ambulance crew for part of their shift. On this particular crew was a paramedic who, through casual conversation, revealed that he is a rabid woodworker. AND, I find out with a little more talk, a JOCK – daveffempt. Three hours later the conversation had progressed through several topics relating to woodworking, Lumberjocks, current projects, past projects, what machines each of has, and the machines each of us want as soon as we can safely maneuver our wives to our way of thinking.
Dave is also fan of a couple of dogs and he is in the process of building them, from what he described, the Taj Mahal of doghouses. He has already built one that would be a step up for some people I know. I have encouraged him to post it and the progress he’s making on the “big” house. Let him know that we are all interested in seeing what he’s doing.
Have others had this kind of experience in finding other Jocks out there?

Delta + Max Tool = Poor Service Follow Up

On June 17th, I posted the info about the problems I was having with Max Tool and Delta after I ordered a Delta Mortiser. Well, it’s only taken me a week to get the order cancelled and the cancellation confirmed. Today I talked to a manager at Max Tool in their “Customer Service” department and he told me that the order was cancelled. When I called on June 19th, he (it was the same guy) told me that he would first have to check with Delta to make sure that the mortiser had not been shipped. He would call me back and let me know. I didn’t hear from him so I had to make my third call to Max Tool today. Of course when I asked for a confirmation number, email, etc, I was told that they didn’t do that and if I wanted confirmation to go to the internet and check my account through the card issuer.
I challenged him on the fact that they had charged my account on the date of the order (May 13) and that it shouldn’t have been charged until the date of shipment. But, he explained to me that “anytime you order on-line you are charged immediately.” His ignorance of how most companies do business when ordering through the internet was astounding. I have several order confirmations which clearly state that the card will not be charged until date of shipment. I guess the interest charge on my card will be the price I pay for a mistake I made.
Fair warning- this was my experience with Max Tool. And Delta (Black & Decker) must not be concerned about it either. Read some of the comments from other Jocks on my previous blog entry. I hope I have saved the other approximately 4300 Jocks some hassle.

Delta + Max Tool = Poor Service

On May 13, 2008 I ordered a Delta Mortiser through maxtool.com. Well, it is now June 17, 2008 and I’m paying interest on the purchase and the mortiser is on back order. No one at Max Tool or Delta have an idea when they will be able to deliver. Let me say that again. No one at Max Tool or Delta have an idea when they will be able to deliver.

This would have been my first purchase of a Delta tool. I know that several of my fellow Lumberjocks have Delta machines and are happy with them. But when I run into a problem like this with any company, it tells pretty much all I need to know about how they do business. They took my money and can’t deliver the product. I can cancel the order for a full refund, but neither company has agreed to pay the interest accumulated on the purchase since they grabbed the money.

The Max Tool site didn’t indicate that they couldn’t get the product delivered. The Delta site doesn’t or didn’t indicate that it was a back order product.

I don’t know what is going on with Delta, or for that matter Max Tool, but I, for one, will be doing business elsewhere in the future.
