01-03-2019 05:53 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Road Trip, bought a few board feet of ash…..five @ 4/4×6 x 6’ ( more or less) and a 2×4 x 8’....but, what to build with this treasure trove? Got to watching The Woodwright’s Shop,,,,Peter Follansbee was showing off a Carved Oak Desk Box….hmmmm. Picked out a few ideas,,,Grandson #3 would like a Computer Desk, sometime….so… Use a few ideas from Follansbee, and a Rachel’s Standing Desk that I made last year… Kind of blend ...

Part 2: Legs, Aprons, and Stretchers...

01-04-2019 05:21 AM by bandit571 | 4 comments »

Oh my! Two trips to the shop, today….first was to size some leg stock..had a plan drawn up.. Figured I could get the base done, and then size the “hutch” from there….Hauled a few items to the shop…getting that 8 foot long 2×4 to the shop was a bit..fun. Had the bench cleared off.. Needed to clean the saw off, as well… Needed two crosscuts from the 2×4…that didn’t involve this end.. Set the two on the saw, while I got set...

Part 3: Tenons and beads

01-05-2019 02:02 AM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Ok…in the shop, tenons get made first…I used a small combo square, set to 1/2”, locked it down as tight as I could.Laid out for the 1/2” long, 1/4” thick tenons.. To get the 1/4” line… I just come in from both sides 1/2”....3/4” thick board….then time to set up the mitersaw.. For doing the shoulder cuts. Half will need these stock holders to keep the parts steady…also needed a stop block Set so I have a 1/2”...

Part 4: Tenons done, mortises started

01-06-2019 01:07 AM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Unable to get to sleep last night…meandered down to the shop. A pair of 1×2s needed cross cut to length, edges jointed until they matched each other….any saw marks needed planed away.. Plane is a Millers Falls No. 11….seemed to work nicely, enough..made a mess of shavings.. Didn’t even clean up, just trudged back upstairs and tried to sleep, again….. Got a late start today….waited until after Lunch…meandered to the shop about 1 pm̷...

Part 5: Sunday's Workout

01-07-2019 08:38 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Needed to change to a cove bit on the router….legs, aprons and stretchers needed their moldings done, before any glue ups could be done. “Router lift” to adjust the depth of cut… I was going to clamp the parts to the bench, and mill the coves…bench was still set up for the mortises I needed to chop….clamped the parts to the tablesaw’s wing.. I’d run the router up to the clamp, then move the clamp to the far end, then finish the cutsR...

Part 6: foot rest, frame details

01-09-2019 05:11 AM by bandit571 | 4 comments »

Got the base out of the clamps…and set up to install the “foot rest” .....One will get centered..about 9” back from the front of the legs, the other will be around 5 – 3/4” or so from the back leg… Two holes, two drills…third for the 1-1/8” screws. Drill the counter-bores first, switch drills, and drill the pilot holes..dab of glue. Rotate, and do the other ends…base can now be set aside… Viewed from the “front&...

Part 7: Frame installed, desk sides milled

01-10-2019 04:14 AM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Two trips to the shop….with naps inbetween…fighting a chest cold…among other things… Frame came out of the clamps...Sanded smooth and flat. Missed those slotted holes….went with a few counter bored holes…three in the front and back rails, and one in each end rail….1-1/8” screws, again. Milled a block of tapered Ash plugs, glued those in place, then trimmed them flush.. There IS a plug sitting there….honest.. I was going to fil...

Part 8: Dovetails and migraines

01-12-2019 05:39 PM by bandit571 | 7 comments »

Usually not a good combination….seemed to have “lost” a day…. Plan was to do through dovetails, to connect the four sides of the desk unit….didn’t quite go as plannedLaid out a few tools…to do the lay out work… That bevel gauge…the angle it’s end was cut at….turned out to be the same angle I wanted for the pins.. Was going to use those dividers to set the spacings….I merely came in from each edge. And whatever th...

Part 9: Catching up

01-14-2019 03:45 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Figured I could at least finish the dovetails. Had the pins from the front done earlier. Used those to mark out the tails, and the bandsaw to make a few cuts….easier than using the handsaw, and I can see the cuts better.. Used a board under the part, to save the top of my bench. Still was a bit rough trying to clamp these in place. Like before, I chopped about halfway down, then flip the board over..(Mountain Dew was from thursday..yuck) And complete the chops, nice when I c...

Part 10: Been busy, need to get caught up

01-18-2019 01:00 AM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Where was I? Had some mortises to chop? Well, I set up the router table, to mill grooves to hold all those pencils/pens Needed a few of these chopped out. Backer strip for the pencil holder..Was going to use the thin Ash strips…..went out and bought a 1/4” thin strip of Poplar, instead.. Rather than a full width hole, I made them to accept a notched end….drawer shelf is now full depth….dry fitted Had to trim the poplar a few times…kept wanting ...

Part 11: Lid work

01-19-2019 11:53 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Among other things…4 hours of shop time…..wasn’t that great of a day..meh..Began by tracing around the desk, once it was as centered as I could get it….then drill a few pilot holes… Was hoping I would miss a few things underneath…nope…corner blocks were in the way. Placed the desk back on the base…kept trying to clamp things in place….finally found a 3×3 block, and clamped things down.. Fun part was lifting this thing up, on...

Part 12: Lid installed, PIP

01-21-2019 04:04 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

2 hour shop time last night, 4pm to 6pm….parts for the lid were taken out of the clamps, sanded clean, and squared up. Bread board ends needed trim a bit. Found a strip of scrap that I could use to set the “meeting angles” of the lid Short section is for the top shelf. Once the angles looked decent, I could use these to set the bevel on the tablesaw The long section needed a bit of clean up, bandsaw did a wavy cut….once that was where it matched the top shel...
