Part 1: Starting up

07-03-2018 01:59 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ok..just can’t seem to sit around all day…gets boring. Daughter asked about building a smallish, 3 drawer Chest of Drawers for GrandBRAT #5…...so…Mean Old Grandpa gets to do the build. Trying to keep things rugged, but simple….9 yr olds are a bit rough on things. After being told that Menard’s was too far of a drive, and to go to Lowes…the Boss got sticker shocked….1×2 x 6’ that cost 3 times what a 1×2 x 8’ did &...

Part 2: Mortise work

07-03-2018 02:27 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ok, time for some sit-down work.. Cut-resistant gloves…to keep me from getting cut, by these things Set things up to chop a few mortises.. Why the backsaw? These mortises, being right on the ends, I use a little different way to chop them out.. I use the tenon that will go here, to lay things out… Backsaw to make an angled cut….I also “pull” the toe of the saw back a few times from the back corners.. Then a chisel to dig a hole at the far end&...

07-03-2018 02:51 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Mondays…got to love them….two Doctor visits, about 35 miles apart….the the Boss had a lunch date, then a trip to Wall E World….I had a new set of pills to get, and a box of screws…too hot to sit out in the BLACK van, anyway. Got home, took the new box of screws to the shop…looked around, found the almost full old box sitting in plain sight…gotta be Gremlins down here. Maybe it is them huge spiders? I worked for a while, before I remembered ...

Part 4: Dovetail milling

07-04-2018 02:57 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Ok…went to the shop for a while….got a few things done, before I called it a day. Turned the stack of frames end for end..and plane the end smooth.. Used a #3 sized plane for that. Set the router up to better find the center of the stack… And ran that cut first, this time around..Then reset for two more passes.. One more reset to get the outside cuts.. Then set the stack aside for a while. Got both panels out of the clamps.. Set one aside, for now..have wo...

07-05-2018 04:20 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Meandered back to the shop, yesterday….had a few things to mill up… Side #1 still had two of these sockets to do… While that light comes in handy to see lines..camera hates it…Set this side over in the leg vise.. I knew there was a reason that shelf stuck out a bit…set up the Wards #78… Scratch awl is to pick stuck shavings out….also had a scrap of 1/4” plywood handy..to check the depth of cut.. Thumb was getting a bit sore. On...

07-08-2018 04:32 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Dry fit….meh….One frame needed a hammer to get into place…two frames needed the router ran, as the pins were lopsided…. Added a few clamps, to pull thing together a bit better.. Sides were trying to cup a bit…Let this set a day….while I did some figuring…. OK, today…hauled any and all clamps that were upstairs to the shop ( yardsale finds) and a few other goodies…Got the panel for the top of the case, cut to size….once al...

Part 7: A little assembly...

07-09-2018 04:06 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Well…the cussing wasn’t quite at Drill Instructor level…..more like Squid level…..I made sure that fan was hauled to the shop, this time… And set on “HIGH”...goal was to get the case up onto the empty bench. Slide the loose side off the frames. Figures, had to turn the case around, had one frame that wanted to stick….with the frames still sitting there, I could attach the kickers…with a spot of glue and a screw at each end. I th...

Part 8: Clamps are off, top is on...

07-13-2018 03:41 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

And the supply of lumber is gone….for now. Took the forest of clamps off, and stashed them out of the way, for now.. Pipe clamps…..may almost have enough, for now.. About half of the other clamps….the “F” style are all hanging up. Cleared the top of the bench. Had to look over both faces of the top panel….trying to decide on which would look better….then set the “good side” down onto the bench. Needed to add the corner bloc...

Part 9: Face frame, and a back

07-17-2018 04:43 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Trying to get caught up….from a “Lost Weekend” and a VERY BAD Monday…..somehow managed to get a back installed… The way the case was…26” wide..vs..24” wide panel…..laid the panel sideways ( 48” wide?) and cut one panel to fit. Will get the other section in a moment….you will notice I have the face frame installed. Just 6 sticks of pine.. Glued and screwed in place. I used counter-bored holes, and will fill them wit...

Part 10: Plugging along

07-18-2018 02:26 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Was a very busy day, yesterday…..so I’ll post this in a couple episodes today. First off, needed to get the case off the bench. To do that, I needed to make a bunch of plugs, install them…and then trim them all flush…. Veritas 3/8” Tapered Plug Cutter.. It does have a bad habit of biting off a plug, now and then. I try to avoid any knots, as well….a pin knot got “plugged”, anyway…Cutter ate 2, chewed up a third, and that pi...

Part 11: Dovetails?

07-18-2018 03:06 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Ah yes, the old debate….Tails first..vs..Pins first…...Dungeon Shop goes Pins first. So.. My bevel square. There is a small combo square laying there as well. bevel is set to the angle I use for dovetails(need to write it down, sometime..) Where the groove comes through, one side of the pin is straight. Covers the groove. Then I work from each edge towards the center, laying out a few pins. had two backsaws to use, one was the “Veteran” and the other was...

07-19-2018 02:08 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Got the first drawer out of the clamps yesterday…..planes and the beltsander to clean things up. Had to keep working on the sides…drawer was binding a bit….finally got it to almost close….wax on the moving parts helped with that last inch….added a pair of knobs, so I could at least pull the drawer back out… Hauled both 1×8 planks to the shop. Circular saw to cut out the very bad spots…. A regular Knot Farm. Somehow managed to get en...

Part 13: A second drawer is done

07-20-2018 03:36 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Just one more to do.Got busy yesterday….rest of the dovetails for the (NOW) top drawer were done. Had an issue with a knot right where the dado was going through… Was a bit rough on the Stanley #39. Mitre saw wasn’t cutting the walls level..was hard to see the far side.Got out a panel saw, to level the cuts.. The knot didn’t bother this saw a bit. First drawer seemed to like the middle opening better.. So the second drawer made is now the Top Drawer. ...

Part 14: Last of the dovetails are done

07-21-2018 03:09 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Still need to buy a board for the back of the drawer. Needed to clear off the bench, first.. The shavings are from sizing the front of the drawer. Still needed a couple more “swipes” for the final fit..laterEven cleaned the floor, BEFORE I got started….still had to clean it a few more times. Got moving around just after 2pm in the shop. First, the drawer front needed a groove milled. Benchdog at one end.. A jig to keep the board from sliding around...

Part 15: Last drawer done, and a PIP

07-22-2018 02:59 PM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Board was brought to the shop, yesterday… Two cuts were needed to be done, to get this done to size… Once those were done, and the back set aside for a bit….I knocked the other three parts back apart, had grooves to mill for the drawer’s bottom to go into… Since these were the last of the grooves I needed milled, I could do something different for the dados Made a new jig…..set up the Stanley 45 as a dado plane.. Turns out that a #18 cutter...
