« Part 6: Page #3 in the clamps....finally Part 7 of Pine Auger bit box series no next part

The blank came out of the clamps today. Marked it for the size of the box, trying to get as much of an old knot cut off as I could. One part of the blank was a bit fatter than the other..

Sanding that down would have taken too much time and sandpaper.. we have ways..

After drilling a pair of new dog holes, on a center line from the vise…I used a Stanley #5c with a cambered iron. Going across the grain, didn’t take all that long to get close to flat. Then turn the blank 90 degrees, and go with the grain, but with a smoother of a jack plane..

Had to do this to both faces of the blank..

This face had a touch of a ridge. Plunked the lid onto the stack of “pages”...

Sooo, I now need to get rid of all those gaps. Already started on the top page…before I had to go run a bunch of errands. I need to install the last of the hinges. Plan to attack the gaps? Place the box in the vise, hinge side down. Run a handsaw down where each gap is. The kerf cut will remove the excess wood that is causing the gaps.

First off, I might want to clean the bench up a tad? As I made a mess again…

Then IF I can get a day or two without Honey-dos and errands…..I might get this about ready for a finish?

No such thing as a day without Honey Dos, Bandit, unless you don’t have a honey!
Neat ‘trick’ with the sawing away the gaps.

Well, Gap-osis is almost done away with. Got as much as I could..

So, since I have to wait on the latches to get to the shop…I might just put a finish on this block of pine…

This is a 50/50 mix of BLO/Varnish…...we’ll se how it turns out. Almost time to post as a project? As soon as I get the latches on. I think this blog is about done…

So, maybe a PIP before we go?

After a good sanding, and a roundover on the lid..

With a block plane, of course….now IF I can get the latches to the shop…

Maybe it might qualify as a project?

Hook & eyes are from Menards…..might wind up looking like a chain down the front.

Between the cost of the parts, and shipping…..decided to wait on any orders to UM EX. Their LT-25 was just about what I was looking for….

$8.50 for a bag of 10 parts…haven’t seen what the shipping would be. Hook& eyes were #1 a piece. At Menards. 2 to a package @ $1.97. I bought three packs, and a package of brass corners….

Made a “chain” out of the Hook & Eyes. 4 corner brackets to a $1.97 package. With a bunch of very tiny screws. Needed a pilot hole drill..

For both the screws, and the hook & eyes. Small screwdriver, too.

Currently have the second coat on the box. Went with the redder Witch’s Brew. Will give it a rub out later today…

Looks pretty flash,

I made a Chisel box many years ago for my chisels enjoyed it almost as much as reading all about your exploits.

Keep up the good work!... as for a project I will be disapointed if you do not post it when complete!!

It has now been posted as a Project.

We’ll see how that turns out..

Next up? Well….there is an empty box that used to hold a few drill bits. Might try to fill it up with something else? Stay tuned….
