« Part 5: Updates.. Part 6 of Pine Auger bit box series Part 7: Lid work »

Well, some fellow named Gumption finally found where I was hiding out, so, off to the shop I went. I had that Stanley #45 set up as a “Hollows” plane. Yes, Stanley made cutters like this…...IF you can find, and even afford them. Anyway, started milling the rest of the grooves…

Groove #2…fighting the grain, still

Groove #3….I needed the cam rest, as I was out in the middle of nowhere. I was also no longer fighting the grain. Had to turn the blank around, to mill the last grooves..

Was even taking decent shavings. Just worked my way backwards. Didn’t even adjust the depth of the cut. Got this and a fifth groove milled. Now I needed something to hold the bits still…

Found a piece of scrap, marked where the shanks were going. Made a bunch of saw cuts. Chisel to knock the waste out, and pare the thing smooth. test fits?

Something like this. I could then mark all the outside pieces to height. Test fit them…

Yep, a little trimming, here and there. Set things up for glue and nails…

And worked my way around the “block” until I could start to apply a few clamps…

Yep, I still had two more I could have used…..Laid this on the bench, so it won’t get knocked onto the floor..

And loaded up the bits. 1 20/16", 1 18/16”. 2@ 14/16” and one at 12/16” ( I think). Still have enough stock to build the fourth page of this “book”..

The Stanley #45 will get a different cutter or two, as the rest of the bits are a bit smaller. Then, maybe a front cover..aka “lid”? Stay tuned, maybe a finish line by the weekend? Unless I go back to playing …hooky ( shhhh..)

Well, the outside pieces were resawn from a 1×6( about 5-1/2”) so..

This is with the fourth page just resting in place. I got the lid into the clamps today..

So, maybe add another 3/4” to the height? Still have to work on the gappiness going on….

Oh, and add some more hinges….

Between the weight of the Pine, and a full load of auger bits, this is going to be a heavy box to move around. Have to look for some handles to carry it around with….

Maybe this weekend, I can get this about ready for a finish? Maybe?
