« Part 3: Stanley got his groove back Part 4 of Cherry finger jointed box series Part 5: It is out of the clamps! »

Well, I was going to clear a path to my mitresaw bench, but.

I’d have to move a lot of “stuff” out of the way, just to use that mitre saw clear back by the wall, just for these three cuts?

Well, THAT ain’t going to happen, so how about I clear off the bench’s top, and add a smaller mitre saw there?

One, I unfold the GEM, add four screws to attach it to the bench’s top. That saw was way too big. And, must have been a thicker saw used at some point, as the guides were too wide set..

I got out the #4 backsaw I had been using, loosened that screw, clamped the guides to the saw’s plate. I stole one clamp off the pine panels” glue up..

Much easier when I don’t have to hold on to the board while using the saw. Didn’t do to badly..

Nice and square, now. Got that out of the way, put the saw away, folded the mitre box up…

And stashed it out of the way. Got the other clamp off the pine panel. Marked it for width….1/8” too wide. Length? after cutting for square, it will be a loose fit, won’t have to add a tongue on the ends. Panel did need some plane work…..

Normal glue up around here. thicknesses didn’t quite match up at the joint. The Junior Jack flattened that out, then a bit of work with the #4 smoother

Still working the “high side” down, until that rough spot goes away. Then, there was the wavy edge where the 1/8” USED to be..

Since the #4 was still out of the till, might as well use it. Needed a straight edge for the next item to be used..

A few weeks ago, I had bought this “new” 1/4” match cutter…turns out, it don’t fit this plane, won’t “seat” in the groove for it. I tried the other 1/4” cutter i had…still couldn’t get the skates to sit right. Went and got out the 3/16” match cutter…..everything works!

Well at least this edge. The other had something the Stanley @45 does not like..

Knotty wood. Did a test fit..

Knots? What knots? there were two of the critters. Got the other sides of the box out, set the panel into the grooves..

A little loose, leaves room for expansion that way. Time to put away the #45, for now…

Until needed for something else. Still need to finish the lid’s frame and panel. Stay tuned, the cussing has begun…

OK…wandered back down there, after I got the all clear about the laundry…

Bottom panel still needed some work done, one end was a little long, trimmed the excess off. Bandsaws don’t really cut all that straight, so I had some plane work to do

Checking with a square for any dippity-dos

I also had a bit to plane on the face sides. Couple high spots to level out. Finally, one of the box’s ends needed planed down a bit, for a better fit. Finally decided to just glue the box up…

I think I have almost enough clamps? The right side of the box has a curve to it. Diagonals matched, but the side’s curve was throwing off the square. After the clamps come back off, I will go about flattening that curve.

Maybe then, I can work on the lid. Frame & Panel style, I did get the panel cut down to almost the size needed..

Might take awhile to get the lid ready…..stay tuned….
