« Part 1: Resaw some 4x4s Part 2 of Pine Project, 4x4s series Part 3: Getting the aprons sized »

Ok, this project is to see just what I can build with just those four leftover 4×4s. So far, there is a “top” awaiting so more plane work. Letting it season a bit, first. I also have a few blanks to make aprons out of….a full 4/4” thick ones, too. Which leaves the stuff from the fourth 4×4…

Had a few leg blanks sawn

The four were ganged up, with one end flush. Measured out 24” and mark a line across with a square. This way, all four will be the same length…in theory. Clamped the mess to the bench’s top. Overhanging the end vise. Circular saw to make a cut..

Ok, decided to actually these as legs….needed to make some room over at the lathe, first..

Can’t even get in there…..moved a couple things around…

There, that’s better ( for now)....Needed to dig out a tool. They do make tools to find the center of a blank, right?

Got a couple of those “V” shaped thingys at an auction awhile back. Installed the first blank on the lathe.

After making a mess on the floor ( my nice clean floor??)

Had one leg turned. Hmmm, had to first run a cord over to the lathe, tried to start the lathe, pop the breaker in the power cord, restart, ah it runs! Run a cord to the grinder, and sharpen a couple DULL lathe chisels…all to get one leg? Called it a night..

Today? Well, wandered down to the shop. Turned three more legs….then put one leg BACK on the lathe..why?
It was a bit fatter than the others. Eyeball soon said it was…close enough. Pine is not the easiest to turn..

They aren’t perfect matches….just close, is all. A few chip-outs here and there….

Not even left to make a shelf, so I’ll do without one. Otherwise, there would be a block at the bottom of the leg, to hold a stretcher for the shelf.

That was just about enough for one day…..ankle deep in little shavings from the lathe. Next up?
maybe some sort of aprons? Plain? Straight? Cloud lift? Curves? Don’t have anything to build a drawer left. Kind of hard to make a 1/4” bottom out of a 4×4, anyway. IF there is a splay to the legs this time around….I’ll keep it at about 5 degrees. Once the aprons are done…..might do a bit of mortise and tenon work….

Not sure IF one could just go out and buy a single 4×4x8’.....might take at least two? Stay tuned….another week, and I’ll be ready to use that Witch’s Brew Finish…

I always enjoy seeing what you will come up with.
