After a loft bed build, I had four 4×4s left over. Boss finally told me to get them out of the Dinning Room!
OK, Laid some lines out, and tried the bandsaw
Cuts seemed to go which everyway they wanted. Tried to get them close to the lines….Figured I could at least plane them close to flat..
A Corsair #5 Scrub Jack got things almost flat, then a longer plane tried it’s luck…
Stanley No. 7c…...Got three boards planed close to flat, and had a few more to do…
There was one skinny plank in there…set it aside. Put the rest into the clamps with some glue…called it a night
Well, football games weren’t going too well. Might as well trudge back down and de-clamp that “top”
Scrubbed the heck out of both faces, not sure yet will be the “show side” Scrub planes, cambered jack planes, jointer planes…they all took a turn at it. I also mark a square line on each end, and cut the line with a saw. Got down to a smooth plane..
#4 sized plane by Millers Falls…. Set the “top” aside, had two other 4×4s to resaw. Wasn’t happy with the cut from the bandsaw, sooo, clamped one 4×4 to the benchtop, marked two lines, and a circular was run down the lines, cutting the line.
Just one side was done this way. Tried the bandsaw one more time….to seperate the three slabs….smaller kerf of the bandsaw… left a bit of “junk” on two faces. Ran the slabs through the bandsaw again, and cut off the extra stuff. Back to the bench, clamp each down, handplane them smooth..
Close to one end, a HUGE knot was sitting in the way. Hmmm the slabs will be too long anyway, soo, cut the knot off. Had a second slab, smaller knot…..gone. Marked that slab to match the other one.
Needed to make four leg blanks….circular saw again..
This time, marked aline down the center, and cut the line, rotate, and repeat. Laid them down to mark the center line again
Then gave the bandsaw another try. Still had a wavw effect, but I could at least plane that away..
Got the saw marks planed off…..back is in bad shape, called it a day. Sawdust all over me, hard to see out of my glasses. Swept up the ankle deep shavings. Did a bit of laundry for the Boss….and went upstairs to MY chair. Had to “boot” the Shop Cat off MY chair, first. Heating pad set on BROIL, Mountain Dew in hand. It will do for one day…stay tuned.
