Ok, hitched a ride to WalMart and bought some Lag screws, and some washers….$2.08 counting tax.
Borrowed two of my son’s drills. Also used one of mine. Pilot holes for the lags to go into. Son has an electric impact driver. Added a long extension, and drove the lags home. had to lay ON the floor for this little job..
Dug around through the scrap piles….found some 5/4 pine….way too long and a bit too wide…we have ways of dealing with that…
marked the cut lines, circular saw to LEAVE the lines. Clamped the new & improved face in place. Removed one short screw, drill a pilot hole through and then Hammerhead drill to drive a newer #8 wood screw home. Repeat for the other three. Moving face is now nice and thick…about 1-1/2. Added a few more screws out at the ends.
Now, have been told that there is NO WAY this vise could ever function as an end vise. At least without a stop/dog in it. So, laid out a spot for a hole, inline with the dog holes in the bench. Cordless drill was fitted with a large bit
That be a 12” sweep PEXTO brace, and a 3/4” bit
Took a couple tries to get the hole deep enough for the dogs I use.
A test drive showed I needed a couple more..
So…out came the drill again
Needed two holes. This one, and one in the bench’s top. had to match the existing holes, too
And another test drive?
Had to use a jack plane, to relevel things to match the bench’s top. Then a block plane to champfer some edges, as the new face was a hair bigger
That strip of LONG pine? It matches the end cap on the bench.
The $10 vise is now a $12.08 vise. I think it might just work now….
