« Part 2: Working on a bottom for the box Part 3 of The drill box series Part 4: finishing touches, bit racks »

Well, went down to the shop this morning, removed the lid blank from the clamps…meh

Needed a bit of saw work to square things up to the box. Ok, first we work over the box itself, then layout where the box fits the lid at. jack planes to level the sides of the box at the dovetails. beltsander helped at the corners.

Laid the box on the lid, drew some pencil lines. Bandsaw TRIED to follow the lines….need to work on the bandsaw later…

Lid was a bit large for the shootin jig, so I just clamped it into the leg vise..

Added a second clamp to hold it better. Worked all four sides this way. Millers Falls No. 14 and No.11 on the edges…

Ok, edges are basically squared to the lines. Laid the lid on the bench….hmm. needs to be face planed as well. Slight differences in the two DONATED BY JEFF Maple….We have ways…

had to plane both faces….Ok, time to match these two up. Clamped both into the vise..

“Plan” was to give this a slight “Tumblehome” to the sides. Where they appear to lean in towards the top. All four sides were planed and sanded. Finally could take this thing out and set it on the bench. No hinges yet, so rotating this thing was…tricky. Mallet help keep things in line. A look at this box?

And, just to see HOW this will look with a finish of sorts

Gave the outside a coat of BLO. Well, most of the hard part is done. The insides need to be done, hinges bought and installed. Stay tuned…

I think I like the beveled lid edges, Bandit. It’s different.
