A while back, I bought a “Parts Plane” for another plane rehab project. I was interested in the bolts, and the frog. When the plane arrived, along with some other parts, I decided to try things out. Bad mistake, actually….

The Parts Plane:

Not much to look at,is there? a gray base, and red frog, and some handles that need some work. I slipped some needed parts onto this Parts plane, and decided a “Test Drive” would be fun…

The parts installed. And a test drive along some edge grain..

I got to thinking (THAT is where trouble happens) Maybe do the handles up, shine the base up, and see what turns up….

Bare bones. The handles have been stripped, still debating a finish. And now, The rest of the pictures..

Spare Lever cap, spare chip breaker, and a Buck Brothers 2” iron. Does this plane work?

Afraid so… Now I’ll have to buy another parts plane… A look at the sole on this “New” plane.

So, before you buy a Parts Plane, be sure it will be JUST PARTS.

That’s why you’re supposed to buy a parts plane with a cracked sole. Good job on the restoration.

There seems to be some question about whether this is a Sargent made plane, or, a Stanley Victor 1104. Don’t know , but I do like this little plane. Don’t even know what “type#” it is. It willl still do a job that i ask it to. And for about a meal at the “Golden Arches”, the price was right.

Post script to this plane. The front knob was used on a #5 i was building, along with the iron, chipbreaker, lever cap, and frog. Made a new tote for that #5 project plane, out of black walnut.

The base is on Ebay , for sale. I have a “new” Craftsman #3 to take it’s place in the shop. Just never ends, does it?
