« Part 6: Rails getting done Part 7 of End Table, out of Ash series Part 8: glue up prep, and other things »

Hmmmm….Had 3 tasks to do….2 out of 3 ain’t too bad? First was make a little jig, to help lay out where the mortises will be….that way, the rails will be at the same height, all the way around….1/4” plywood…

Hole to trace around, to lay out the mortise…one edge is marked outside….as this goes to the outside edge of each leg. The “X” goes to the bottom of the leg. Jig can be flipped over..

As need be. Once it is in place….

And doesn’t move around like this one did…I can trace around inside the opening with the pencil…

Ok, the “fun” started when I had to lay the base on a side…weight of the clamps didn’t help…then clamp the legs to the “work table” and chop out the two mortises on that side..

One done…got the other done…then try to rotate this thing for the next two…

4 done, 4 to go….was a royal PITA to rotate 90 degrees to get #5 and #6

#7 and #8…clamps were getting in the way…had one fall off, even…finally got all 8 mortises done

Tried that diagonal clamp to pull things into square….it even fell off…we have ways…

Called a corner block. Glue and screws, 45 degree cuts from the mitre box. 8 blocks were made…have 4 drilled and ready…

Counter bores are a tad too deep..will add washers to the screws. Aprons and the rails will get these. Not only for square, these also reinforce the corners.

Closed the shop for awhile ( Supper!) then decided to check on the plywood panel….was plenty wide…but, 2” too short? Hmmm…found a 1×4 about the right length to sit between the rails….#78 to mill a rebate along the edges. Will split the panel in the middle….with this new rail between them…..counterbored hole for a screw to attach the middle rail..cover with a Walnut plug. Will also be a Walnut “inlay” along the mid rail where it meets the side rails….

Need to tear the entire mess down today…sand all the parts smooth. Label each as to where they go. May add a small cove detail to the two “show” edges of the legs. Beaded corner needs sanded, too.

May need a couple helping hands….when the glue up starts..wear ear plugs…may be a few “Cold Ones” involved?

Stay tuned…

When things get real bad in the shop there is a secret stash of Brandy! Now were did I put it?
