Short vacation from the shop….The Boss has found something else she wants built…uh-oh..
Wood Vehicle Gas Automotive exterior Machine

Old &Ugly needs to go, I am told. Built 26 years ago..started out as a 4 drawer chest of drawers….that got changed to a changing table, when our son was born….Instead of drawers, they became shelves…with doors…..later it was a Pantry….now just a catch-all….open those doors at your own risk….

Boss found a catalog ( uh-oh…) that had a picture..

Hmm…Flat-Pack? No, not in this house. i already had a small stash of oak..
Wood Floor Flooring Hardwood Wood stain

But needed almost 20bf more…..contacted a friend of mine, and made a deal for a few more boards..

Let this sit a day or two….time for the Pen & Paper routine…
Table Wood Office supplies Writing implement Font

State of the Art Drafting Table, right? Wanted to lay out sizes, and such….needed a front view..
Wood Rectangle Floor Flooring Font

Cubby holes became drawers….waiting to see how the doors turn out…wood wise.
Adhesive Wood Road surface Flooring Material property

A look at the end/side of this thing….won't be as huge as the last project….only 25+" wide. 16" deep….built around that Microwave Oven…

A tablesaw has been moved down to the shop….mainly to do better rip cuts. Rough cuts for crosscuts, too.

Natasha: "You have Plan, Darlink?"
Boris B.: " Of course I have Plan, they don't always work, but I always have Plan.."

Stay tuned….

Side #2, and a top

Ok..side #1 came out of the clamps, today..

This may be the outside of the case..
Wood Gas Composite material Hardwood Lumber

And this goes to the inside….Plan right now is to have both panels done, clamped together inside to inside face, and trim to final size….and a rebate for the back panel to sit in…

Had three more boards to glue up….to make Panel #2..
Wood Hardwood Plank Flooring Wood stain

Kind of gappy….We have ways..

Clamped to the bench….run a jack plane down the edge. I had a straight edge line drawn , so I could joint the edges for a glue joint….Neither the jack, nor the No. 7c that can after, have a camber to the edge of their irons..

Jack to get close to the line, Jointer to finish to the line. Then on to the skinny middle board…

Same routine. hard to clamp to the bench? Not when I have a tool well handy..

Got the edges jointed…checked for gaps..

Needed a third caul in the center…skinny board had a curve going on..

let this sit overnight, again….wanted to cut enough parts for a top for the case….two boards came from the cut-off stack….needed a third one…had to haul another 6' plank to the shop…find the best 26" long section, and cut away the rest…then lay things out..
Table Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank

Hmmm…work in progress. Came out at 16" wide….needed a little more…but will go with what I have. there were two cut-offs….one was a bit plain-jane…may make a drawer front. Then set the other cutoff on top of it..

Drawer front? Not sure what I can do with this…thing…flip it over..

Will let side 2 sit until tomorrow, then try to get the top into some clamps. Then start on frames and such for the inside of the case, and maybe the face frame. Maybe next week, I can build the doors and drawers?

Stay tuned

LONG day in the shop

But, got a few things done. Had a Barn Sale to go check out….not so much for the old tools, but maybe get enough old Pine to help the build along…..1×10 x 8' and a pair of 1×3 x 8' pine boards…$15….

So..first task for today..after lunch, was to plop the sides onto the bench….and do a trim..

Almost just a slab….edge back by the tool well, was close enough of a match, that just a jointer plane would be needed….the edges closest to the camera? needed something a little more drastic..

Steel straightedge to lay out a straight line..just missing the divot….went to test the circular saw…went ahead and made the cut…figured I could joint the sawn edges later…

Got the other edge jointed….then checked for gaps..

Stick that will be part of the face frame. Then the ends needed squared off. One end was fairly easy, just had to slide a few things around..

Cleaned the saw marks with the beltsander. The other end? Needed a guide for the saw to follow..

Guide is spaced from the side of the saw blade to the outside edge of the saw's base…couple clamps to hold things steady, run the saw through, pushing it against the guide..
Wood Machine tool Wood stain Hardwood Plank

Then separate the two sides for a bit….will make the next job easier…
Wood Gas Hardwood Composite material Table

1/2 pint paint can to draw a curve….while each side was flat and held down, I also sanded and planed the "show faces". Sabre saw to make the cuts….this side wasn't too bad..
Wood Table Hardwood Composite material Plank

This side….this is marked "Inside" for a reason…that joint line?
Wood Table Outdoor bench Bumper Wood stain

One board has a dippity-do…for the sawmill…even they have bad days… Flattened the rest of the side, sanded the other side..
Wood Engineering Gas Composite material Machine

Set up the tablesaw for a rip cut….these will be parts for the face frame…one goes under the drawer, the other two, longer ones go down the front edge of each of the side panels….While the saw was out, and handy…ripped a few cleats, cross cut the 1×10 to length..had to rip a couple pieces to get the correct width..
Table Wood Hardwood Plank Wood stain

I install the cleats, then set the panels in place on them….bottom shelf, and the middle shelf….then cross cut and rip parts for the web frames..
Wood Loom Art Gas Table

Mortise and tenon for the corner joints. Attached to the case via slotted screw holes. one frame gets a kicker. The other the drawer will ride on…will need wider runners for it….will need those corner blocks to attach the top to the case with….
Which leaves one more task for today…
Wood Cabinetry Hardwood Lumber Machine

I only needed to joint one edge, the rest were right of the saw. here, only glue is holding this together….almost didn't need clamps..but…
Wood Gas Engineering Motor vehicle Machine tool

Added them anyway…along with a couple cauls….
Wood Automotive tire Gas Motor vehicle Engineering

This will be the underside of the top….decided to sweep the floor, and call it a day….

Later, I went to check on the dryer…one thing led to another, waiting on the dryer, and one webframe is sitting clamped up. I took the clamps of the top, set the top other with the rest of the parts. Made all the tenons (8) and half the mortises (4)....and glue and clamps…while checking for square….maybe tomorrow, I can get the other frame done?

Stay tuned..getting close to doing a bit of assembly…

A little assembly?

Needed to mill some rebates, get the second frame done….and buy some screws..

No screws? I had maybe 6 that were the right length…..meant a trip to Wall E World ( NOT paying Lowes prices) so that meant an hour's downtime…..Store is just 2 miles away…was VERY busy…5-8 people at each checkout…

After supper had settled in…took all the screws and such to the shop…hope the drill batteries are charged up.

Then take the mess off the bench, place the top good face down on the bench. Figure out which edge was the "front" and then hoist the rest of the case back on to the top. face frame and a back

had some time to kill, waiting on the Boss. Decided to fix the tablesaw, and see what I could get done…
Hauled a plank to the shop….will be cut into parts for the face frame…first, the saw needed some work.

Mitre guage isn't the biggest…at least it doesn't rattle around in the slot. Found a STRAIGHT scrap…attached it to the mitre gauge..

It has a pair of slots for screws. Strip was a bit long, so I ran the mitre gauge down both slots..

Should help some? Crosscut the plank, trying to get two parts for the rails of the face frame….top one, and a bottom rail…what's left for other parts…like all the plugs I'll need to make….plank had a lot a bark to an edge..
Wood Motor vehicle Composite material Engineering Hardwood

HAD. Still too wide. marked them for width…reset the saw ..
Wood Table Plank Hardwood Lumber

The skinny rail I already had…needed trimmed for length, two longer ones are the stiles….each needed a little trim on an end. Reset the saw to do 1/2 lap joints…needed a way to check depth settings..
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank Gas

About the same thickness as the frame parts, looks like this will work…rails were cut…
Table Wood Office ruler Hardwood Rectangle

Bottom rail needed a trip to the bandsaw..
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Plank Wood stain

Blade burned the wood,,beltsander wasn't up to the task..so..
Wood Metalworking hand tool Hand tool Gas Automotive tire

Works for me. Laid out where each rail will go on the case..then on the stiles….top and bottom were easy,, the rail under the drawer was different…
Wood Rectangle Plank Wood stain Outdoor furniture

As it had to match where the drawer runner was…getting ready to start cutting the rest of the half laps…Boss said she wanted to go to the store…..decided to stop at Lowes for the plywood panel, to make a back for the case…
Wood Gas Machine Shipping box Plywood

Actually, I bought two…1/4" x 24" x 48" panels. Was a good idea….width I needed for the back turned out to be 25"! Hmmm, could cut the length to width, and add a filler at the top?

Hoisted the case up onto the two benches..
Wood Hardwood Wood stain Table Flooring

Pipe clamp to pull the sides in tighter, F style clamp to pull things into square…was about 3/4" out…
Wood Gas Electrical wiring Engineering Machine

I was just going to nail the back in place, but..the first nail did a u-turn…..screws were then used. Cut the filler strip to size, installed that….was not going to install the face frame with the case sitting like this….
Wood Floor Flooring Workbench Gas

Thin scraps to cover the tool well..and just stand this thing up..
Wood Gas Machine Automotive exterior Composite material

Thin ones in the back, meant I needed matching ones in the front….not as rocky that way..

Was checking the stiles to the locations…..something was a bit..off….one side of the drawer runner was 1/4" lower than the other…..made a gauge block, set to the lower side….
Wood Flooring Hardwood Wood stain Shelving

"Un-hooked the frame from the case's side, used the block to set the new location, and re-attach the frame to the side, and the back. Had a shelf that was gappy along one side…removed a few screws, clamp to remove the gap, screws into new holes…gap is closed up. A few spots stuck out a bit too far…sanded or chiseled away the offending spot, just enough for the stile to sit.

Clean up of the half lap joints..
Wood Hardwood Font Typesetting Lumber

Just a chisel…Was getting tired, and sore….all the laps were cut, and cleaned up, set up a pair of drills
Motor vehicle Wood Machine tool Gas Engineering

Counter-bore and pilot drills…..Tuesday I will try to install the face frame. Later, I make a bunch of face grain Oak plugs to fill the counter-bored holes, covering the screws. IF I don't try to burn the plugs, this time around.

I think that will be just enough, for one day in the shop…Stay tuned…

Was checking the stiles to the locations…..something was a bit..off….one side of the drawer runner was 1/4" lower than the other…..made a gauge block, set to the lower side….

Just a chisel…Was getting tired, and sore….all the laps were cut, and cleaned up, set up a pair of drills

I'm really liking this one!

Working out a new "system" for this sort of joint…still working out the "bugs"...will descride it WHEN I get working the way I want. Someday, I might get the hang of these…enough to do larger jobs.

Drawer Building 101, part 2

Ok, I had the Stanley 45 all set up to plough grooves for the bottom of the drawer to reside in.

Made a jig, to hold the front and the two sides..
Wood Metal Machine Auto part Naval architecture

Just three sticks of scrap….third one to hold the part down. Front was done first, then the jig was changed to the shorter length of the sides..
Wood Gas Hardwood Machine tool Plank

Got both of these sides done. Then it was time to tear the Stanley 45 down, and set it up for dados..

Exchange the #12 cutter for this #18-1/2 cutter ( matches the thickness of the pine board) exchange the short rods for these long rods ( more balanced better reach) screwdrivers to tear down, turn things around, assemble..
Wood Machine gun Gas Metal Machine

BEFORE I installed these three new parts, I had the main stock ( as it is called) flat on the bench top, nicker needed rotated down. Sliding stock also needed it's nicker rotated down..

All set. Long rods stick out the non-fenced side..just a bit…have a use for that..

Vise as a third hand, while I assemble things…even helped hold the plane, while I set the depth stop..

Just over 1/4" deep. Fence was set about 1/2" away from the cutter. Skates need to be even with the sides of the cutter, to allow the nickers to do their job.
Wood Gas Lumber Composite material Hardwood

All set. Need to change the jig, again….this time I can tighten the jig with the vise..
Wood Gas Composite material Machine Lumber

Then the crossbar gets screwed down at the back of the jig. To remove the part, un-screw one end of the bar, loosen the vise a tad. Ok, dado work..

I drag the plane backwards to use just the nickers. They cut a line across the grain…however, I do not like it when this plane does a "blowout" where it enters and leaves the cut..so…
Wood Composite material Gas Machine tool Machine

I use a backsaw to deepen the lines at where the dado starts and exits….just an inch or so, no need to do the entire line….

Plane makes a boatload of chips, though. Once the depth stop says "STOP"...the "twins" arrive..
Wood Tool Gas Machine tool Auto part

One does a pilot hole, centered in the dado. Three screws are usually enough to attach the back…flip the board over, and the other twin does it's thing..
Wood Vise Automotive exterior Bumper Machine tool

I have a pair of 6" sweep brace drills…one is for pilot holes, this one is for the countersinks…why change bits, when I just change drills? One more task before some cutting and assembly..
Wood Hardwood Composite material Wood stain Plank

Long time ago, I started clipping the back corners at the bottom of drawers, seemed to help when trying to insert a drawer into the case. The side were also used to mark how wide the back should be….a small mark was made on the drawer front, where the groove from the sides stop. Then both the back and the sides layout the size the bottom panel needs to be..
Wood Gas Tool Workbench Saw

Ok, spread some glue into the dovetails, and the dados….mallet to drive the sides home into the dovetails…screws to fasten the back…one pipe clamp and two cauls to clamp the dovetails..right in the center, for now..
Wood Gas Lumber Composite material Hardwood

Screws to attach the bottom, AFTER checking the drawer for square..
Wood Engineering Composite material Electronic device Machine

Then stand the drawer up. and add the other two clamps…

Note that the caul is just below the drawer's front. Then stash the drawer out of the way, while the glue dries

While I also work on a Puzzle….of how to cut the remaining parts out of what Oak I have left…..yep, forgot to generate a "Cut List".....have the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up working things out….then I mark the results down on the Plans..
Stay tuned….next episode will be about Door Building 101…...while a few glue-ups cure,,,

Cut list, and a start on the doors

Puzzle was how to cut what Oak I have left, into all the parts I needed to make….
Wood Gas Hardwood Machine tool Machine

This was the easy part. I need a top shelf for the unit above the microwave oven…Shelf needs to be 9" wide, and match the top of the base. Length I can cut to…width?
Table Wood Flooring Floor Workbench

Should be enough, and enough left over for a stile for one of the door frames…
Wood Hardwood Plank Lumber Wood stain

I have these three, at 3/4" thick, by 6-1/2" wide….Topper needs two sides at 8" wide….by 23" long….I can cut one of these down for the 23" blanks…but will need a third piece from another board wide enough to get me to 8" wide…can rip it for the width needed…or, roughly 2" wide, and work from there.
Wood Hardwood Lumber Plank Machine

Then there are these two…5-1/2" wide, by 3/8" thick….Will have to do a glue up for width…should have enough for both door panels…
Table Wood Stool Workbench Gas

Vintage saw? need it for crosscuts and rip cuts….Not doing Oak with a handsaw….

Parts for one side…edges were close enough I didn't need to joint an edge..

Almost didn't need clamps, either…but, since I need to move this out of the way..

Couple of clamp to keep things together…second side panel needed one caul..
Wood Gas Engineering Machine Machine tool

Then set it aside with the first one….until I need them clamps back.. Top was cut for length and ripped for width
Wood Table Wood stain Floor Flooring

Rest of the second 1Ă—6 was ripped down to about 2", along with a few scraps..
Table Wood Floor Plank Hardwood

Should be enough for 4 stiles, and four rails. still have one more 1Ă—6
Wood Table Machine tool Plank Hardwood

Well, there is a shelf in the topper, goes right above the Microwave Oven, needs to be about 8" wide….should be enough in this plank, for that.
Puzzle seems worked out…almost. Need to cut the stiles for length, mark a center point, and figure out the length of the rails…allowing for 1/2" tenons on each end. All the stiles and rails also need a groove ploughed, to house the flat panel….

Drawer? Well, the clamps came off, a test fit was done…right upper corner was a tad too tall…planed that down so the drawer would slide in..
Wood Floor Flooring Wood stain Hardwood

Still a tad snug…waiting on handles, then I can "fine tune" the fit.. two other glue-ups can sit where they are..

Knob is about "knee high" easy to reach. Second door? was a tad too wide for the space….marked the excess width, bandsaw to remove the bulk of it..then a plane to joint the sawn edge..

Couple of test fits…back to the bench…joint the other stile…until the door fits. Then hinges and a knob installed

Need to install two magnetic catches….maybe later today? Cleats were cobbled up…Just ripped two pieces from a scrap of Oak….pre-drill four holes…and attach the cleats to the topper's sides, and the top of the base cabinet…and promptly snapped one screw off….Stepped back a bit..

While changing the router bits…I also changed to a 1/4 round over bit….top edge of the topper's top, and down all the front edges were rounded over. Sander ran around…let the dust settle out for a while…and dry my shoes off

PIP? Well, the Boss likes that "Weathered Oak" stain…meh ( goes on a light gray colour) so that was used (better than paint, at least) and later, after it had quit stinking up the shop…and coat of Amber Shellac was used…
Now the PIP..
Ready?

Will see IF a second coat of shellac will improve things…..then the Gloss Poly….going in the Kitchen later this week

At least it looks better than the thing in the catalog..

Sunday's Finale, and a PIP

Ok, Sunday….nasty, dreary, rainy outside the windows…..even a Hail Storm came through….seems when we get a lot of rain…the Dungeon gets a small creek running across the floor to the floor drain…..

Life in a basement….of course, the creek HAS to go through, right where I'm working….

And each rain shower, a new wave would come downstream. Ok…had a door to repair..

I had went ahead and drilled corner for a deep counter bored hole….each got a LONG screw drove into the corners..bad corner that wanted to come apart got a pipe clamp to close the gaps up, then the screws were added…stiles and rails tried to angle a bit…clamps and cauls to flatten that out, again before the screws were used.
Plugs were glued in…..trimmed and sanded flush..

Same corner as above…find the plug? Plugs, with the cutter going as slow as the drill press could go, the blank wanted to hop around a bit, until the cutter finally started to cut….fixed that problem…

I also needed a few more plugs..

This is the "good" set of holes…other end has a fourth hole….after I had snapped a screw off in the hole..plugs installed, trimmed flush…a little sanding….
Router got changed a few times..

Between the shelf and the top, there needs to be a plywood back panel…bit leaves a rounded corner..we have ways….

Sharp chisel, a few whacks with the hammer….panel was marked for size..

Was just enough room to use the bandsaw to make the cut…..glue and nails to install….and Oak does not like nails
