Have a large pile of Maple, and other hardwood scraps in the shop. Don't really want to burn them….maybe a bit of resaw work….and wind up with a Frame & Panel Box/ Mini Chest?

May make it similar to a Walnut & Cherry box I made a long while back. First, need to resaw some of the chunks down a bit..

Part of the stash. Bandsaw has a 1/4" blade on it..

While it is less stress on the saw, with the replacement motor, at least it is sharper than this one..

1/4" blade wasn't doing too badly, though. had an issue with the motor..it shut itself down…..would not start back up…..until I pointed over to where the "old" motor was sitting….and said something like…"You CAN be replaced"

Begorrah, if'n it didn't start right back up…LOL. Once I got these first parts sawn..

I tried to flatten things out, using a jack plane…..turned out to be a bit too big for this job..

A Stanley No. 3c seemed to be just about right…both for the flattening of the face grain..

Did a decent job as a jointer, too. Ganged a batch up and work them all until the matched..

Seemed to do the job…the two boards?
Wood Flooring Hardwood Plank Lumber

Yes, there are two boards there….was going to book match them for a lid….wasn't wide enough…more on that in a bit..
Wood Sewing machine Tool Workbench Machine tool

Set up a jig, to help resaw some parts to make frames with..
Wood Hardwood Wood stain Plank Flooring

Got what I could at 1-1/2" wide…then finished cutting the left-overs at 1" wide..
Wood Carpenter Hardwood Plank Lumber

They will need to be jointed, and plane for thickness. Found a few more thin parts…

May be able to do a few glue ups, for wider panels?
Decided to add a center board to the lid's panel..
Wood Motor vehicle Gas Automotive tire Machine

ROYAL PITA to glue and clamp up….into a forest of clamps….had more for the cauls than for the glue lines…
There is a caul front and back, on both ends. Will let this mess sit a day…or two.

Need to work on parts for the frames…..then size the panels to fit. Pieces that don't fit…there is always the FirePit…May need to haul the Stanley 45 out, again. Tongue & Groove joints for the corners, and a 1/4" groove to house the raised panels. Cussing has already started..

Stay tuned…

Cutting parts for the frames

Got that panel up of the clamps…and out of my way….
Handwriting Rectangle Font Wood Parallel

This is what the "Plan" looks like…but nothing is set in stone….have to adapt to what sizes I have on hand..
Wood Hardwood Gas Flooring Machine

Made a "cut list" of sorts…it said I needed 4 pieces @ 3/4×1-1/2×8-1/2" so those were milled..
Wood Hardwood Gas Lumber Natural material

It also said I needed 4 pieces @ 3/4" x 1" x 8-1/2".....so milled those up…..then things got….changed..
List called for 4 pieces, to make the front and back frame's rails…..ok, looked through the stash…did not have any at the 12-1/2" length needed….will make do with 11-3/4" instead..
Wood Motor vehicle Lumber Hardwood Automotive exterior

Now, some of these parts were too..fat. Some just a few passes with a plane….some took a trip to the bandsaw for weight -loss….then a pass or two with a plane…..edges needed jointed..

Couple faces needed worked down smooth. Laid out the parts for the front frame ( while I was scrounging up parts for the ends)...

Not so fancy….oh well. There was a problem ( I thought…)

Wood Machine tool Automotive tire Gas Machine

The panels I WAS going to use were a bit too short…..or so I thought….then I remembered I need to cut tenons!
I could adjust the rails to match these short panels….and still use them.

So….that is where I was..yesterday….still forgot to turn that dang fan on….gave up for the evening..

Today? Well, spent a few hours puttering around….that will be shown in the next exciting episode..
Stay tuned

Frame making, and a lot of grooves needed

Got a bit done today…before the Boss made me mow the yard…..sitting in front of the A/C Unit now.

Had the Stanley 45 still set up for dado work….needed to set up for these cutters, instead..

And jointed until they were all the same width…
Then used one to lay out for the tenons….Langdon 75 to make the shoulder cuts…bandsaw to make the cheek cuts

Time for a little assembly?

Got both panels out of the clamps….needed to bevel the edges, to make them into Raised Panels…

First, they needed trimmed and jointed, so they will fit into the frames….then a jig was made up

Two for the other. Set these aside, and bevel the fancy front panel. Once that was done, clamps and glue again

And set it aside, after checking it for square, too.

Which leaves these to make into corner posts for the end frames…along with the rest of the parts…and maybe a lid?

We'll see…stay tuned..

Set these aside, for now. Have the four corner blocks for the end frames to do….cut them all to the final length on the mite box. Gang them up into the vise, and try to get them all the same size..

One of them was having "issues". Had a bit of trouble with it, while cutting a groove along one edge, for the raised panel to sit in. Other three behaved….then, I changed the cutter in the Stanley 45 to mill a tongue…

Had one more chore to do with these. Got the front frame into the vise, and clamped one corner post into it's place..

Ok, corner post are done. Did not have enough Maple thin stock to make two end panels..wasn't in the mood to mess around, and wait on a glue up. had a bit of thin, non-Maple stock handy….Sized the ends to use that..

More parts cut to size, and planed to match..

No hidden knots this time around. These then got a groove milled
Wood Tool Gas Machine Engineering

Which meant I had to reset the Stanley 45 back into groove cutting mode…then cut stubby tenons on the ends..

Then cut two panels to length….good thing there was enough extra, for a third piece….a split happened to the second one…couldn't use it. Parts needed planed flat, and even a bit of panel-raising was done..

Not a whole lot of room to work with. Glue and clamps, after the panels were done, and one was trimmed a bit…
Wood Font Gas Composite material Metal

Keeping them clamps ON the edges wasn't that easy to do,.....tongue was in the way..

Let's just say..that hammer laying there came in very handy….
Maybe later today ( Boss willing, and the back behaves) I can remove those clamps. Need to find out IF I need to run a groove for the box bottom all the way across..or..just add a small cleat for it to sit on. Bottom panel will be just 1/4" Luann plywood…

Once that issue is settled, and the bottom cut to size, I can glue all four sides up into a box shaped object. Then start on making a lid for it. Hopefully, without any more issues….stay tuned.

The part on top will get cut into two end pieces….with a bit of luck, they will be the same size…

After the rest break/nap….snuck back to the shop. Panel needed to be flattened on both faces. Then the #3c did that raised panel thing, to the better looking of the two. set aside. The three rails/stiles needed jointed along both edges, and then planed until they all matched for thickness. Set up a jig, and used the Stanley 45 to plough a few grooves….the two short rails did match for length, for once.

Once the grooves were done, a test fit was done…..after the stubby tenons had been cut. then time for glue, and not quite so many clamps..

had to make sure I had all the parts facing the right direction…

back edge of the lid will be flush with the back of the box…hinges there. Overhang at the other three sides.
Once this is out of the clamps, I can work out the details…..

May be a few days, before I am allowed back in the shop….stay tuned…

Then, noticed that troublesome corner..again. bandsaw to cut a sliver of Maple..

A spot of glue, and a few more clamps. Others got moved around a bit ( was making a Marine blush) and finally..

Some were even trying to hide….let this sit a day…..

This morning, before the errands were run, and after the finger got poked for a blood draw….

The clamps came off, box didn't fly apart, and I could start on cleaning the corners up. Some needed a bit of plane work….some needed quite a bit more..

Had to add another strip of maple….right along the bottom of the rail…made it wide enough, it could support the plywood bottom. Came back from the errands ( and LUNCH)...and finished the clean up. Plane and a couple sanders…even did a bit of hand sanding!!....sheesh.
Decided to add a seal coat of Amber Shellac..

Was a bit tired…took a break…after I had laid out the parts for the lid…

Set the mess on top of the box….for now..letting it sit til the glue cures..

had to make sure I had all the parts facing the right direction…

back edge of the lid will be flush with the back of the box…hinges there. Overhang at the other three sides.
Once this is out of the clamps, I can work out the details…..

May be a few days, before I am allowed back in the shop….stay tuned…
Good looking box bandit. Keep up the good work. Don't forget to take some naps

Lid installed, handle options...

Before I left for the hospital stay…and knowing no stairs would be allowed….I brought the box and the lid up stairs.

Lid had been sanded, front corners were cut round. Block plane to ease a few edges….then let it sit a while…

Not much was done yesterday..once I got back home…was a tad "loopy". Hinges are a small item I can do, today.

Yep, they are small….needed a small pilot hole bit..

The smallest bit that Yankee push drill had, in fact….installed the hinges on the lid, first. Then pilot holes into the box. SMALL screws..

Thinking of adding a handle on each end, to lift the box with…centered on the raised panel..

Had to have the Grandson go back down to the shop, and bring up a few items….can of Shellac, a brush for it, a can of Poly Gloss, and a tool tray..

But..which one? Should it be here on top, at the front edge? Or, centered in the edge of the lid? Large one? Small one? Will see how things go….and heal up..
Stay tuned..

Handles installed, case is varnished

And about ready to post as a Project. Handles went on…using the same Yankee #41 push drill to do pilot holes..

Big handles on the ends..

Went with this for the lid. Shellac applied to the lid, and a few spots that I missed earlier….

Needed a way to hold this lid opened, like this….without using something to prop it open..

Some black chain, cut to length, and a pair of the smallest cup hooks I could dig up…

Once I got the final length ( missed it by two lengths..long) I crimped the hooks down tight, to keep the chain in place.

I finally found the brush for the varnish. So, this morning, a coat of gloss poly was brushed on..

Allowed to dry, and then rubbed out..then added some feet..

I think I can call this project…done.
