Ok..just can't seem to sit around all day…gets boring. Daughter asked about building a smallish, 3 drawer Chest of Drawers for GrandBRAT #5…...so…Mean Old Grandpa gets to do the build. Trying to keep things rugged, but simple….9 yr olds are a bit rough on things.

After being told that Menard's was too far of a drive, and to go to Lowes…the Boss got sticker shocked….1×2 x 6' that cost 3 times what a 1×2 x 8' did …..was going to glue up the side panels and top….but not at what they wanted for 1×10s and 1×8s….found these glued up panels….appeared to have been cut-offs from longer panels….price was right…..saves me a little time with glue ups. Monday, I can go out and buy some more screws? ( Found the old box AFTER I did…) and maybe get the other frame done?

Frames are done, 1/2 the dovetails, too

Mondays…got to love them….two Doctor visits, about 35 miles apart….the the Boss had a lunch date, then a trip to Wall E World….I had a new set of pills to get, and a box of screws…too hot to sit out in the BLACK van, anyway.

Got home, took the new box of screws to the shop…looked around, found the almost full old box sitting in plain sight…gotta be Gremlins down here. Maybe it is them huge spiders?
Wood Engineering Hardwood Tool Lumber

I worked for a while, before I remembered the camera..that "Mondays" thing….Got #4 frame assembled, #3 and #4 got screws as well. Clamped all 4 frames together..beltsander and the planes were used to get all edges to almost match each other….the ends were the ones I wanted to match the best….for the next stepss
Wood Gas Toolroom Engineering Machine

Clamped to the side of the bench. Shelf sticks out a bit, just enough to rest this mess on…that corded object?
Automotive tire Wheel Motor vehicle Bicycle tire Tire

I wanted to add a dovetail bit and the fence to the router, set up to cut dovetails on the ends..
Wood Tool Gas Machine Engineering

First cut only needed 1/2 of the bit..
Automotive tire Wood Bicycle part Motor vehicle Saw

Then make a trip down each side..
Wood Workbench Tool Machine tool Toolroom

When I installed those nails and the screws, I had to keep them back from the edge, so the bit would miss..
Reset the fence…
Wood Machine tool Tool Engineering Workbench

For a second cut…final cut was right down the middle…
Wood Gas Motor vehicle Engineering Machine

Was a tad thin on one of them…..Later today, I can flip this mess over, and do the other ends. Then I need to lay out where these frames will go in the sides, and layout the sockets for the dovetails to slide into. I also need to flatten the panels…as the add-ons were thicker than the panels were….Old #8 will thin that down…

Need to go and buy a couple more 1×2s ans a 1×4….kickers and a face frame. Three 1×8 x 8' to make three drawers, and some 1/4" Luann Plywood..for drawer bottoms and a case back.

Will see how today goes….stay tuned..

Dovetail milling

Ok…went to the shop for a while….got a few things done, before I called it a day. Turned the stack of frames end for end..and plane the end smooth..

Worked decently enough. Arms were getting a bit tired, though. Flipped the panel over, decided to lighten the load on my arms a bit..

  1. 7c and a #4…a cambered jack was also used, to get the real high spots down. #4 was more to clean up.
Had a bit of knot caused tear-out on one end….promptly called that the bottom of the panel..

Which made this end the "Top". Decided it was also the "Inside" of the case. The two scraps are "stand ins" to lay out where the frames and kickers will be. Needed a little bit of room at the top, to allow corner blocks. Going with 1Ă—8s for drawers, so a 7" spacing was used. Used the large square to lay out lines for each frame and kicker..

Worked my way down towards the "foot" area…wanted 5" between the bottom of the drawer, and the bottom of the foot. Which left a little bit extra on the end….including that tear-out.

Came in from the edges about 2-1/2" or so..then used the old varnish can to draw some curves. Panel is too big to cut this on the bandsaw…will use the Vintage saws..

Discovered that can had a dent…will fine-tune that, before I trace this onto the other panel…wasn't quite done for the day, though. Got the "speed square" out..

Need to set how far from the edge of the base to the center of the dovetail bit. Needed to mark the center of the socket the bit will cut. Used the combo square to set to guide…

Then checked for square..
Wood Table Wood stain Floor Hardwood

Two clamps to hold the guide and the panel in place on the bench…

This is where those dovetail pins on the frames will slide in. Reset the guide for the next cut..

This became the "foot end" then I also marked the locations of the sockets..

But the other end needed something else….speed square also works as a circular saw..

I use the saw's foot plate to set the fence…motor side on the waste side ( fence too tall..) and clamp the fence as square as I can…and make the cut, holding the saw against the fence as I go..

Then lay out and cut four sockets…and then the rebate…
Wood Motor vehicle Table Gas Automotive exterior

Then clamped both sides together, to double check how things lined up….then just left them there, while I cleaned the floor, yet again..

Legs were cramping up….fan set on "HIGH" wasn't helping a bit…was time to go upstairs, have a bowl of Ice Cream while sitting in front of the A/C unit….

Maybe later today, IF things cool off a bit…I can cut the top's panel for length? Might have enough left over, to resaw into 5 kickers? maybe a little assembly work? We'll see….
Stay tuned…

You get more work done in an afternoon than I do in an entire weekend, and in the heat and humidity. Maybe I need to ditch the A/C so I don't dawdle about when I'm in the shop?

Do you have any issues with board movement on big pieces like this when they get moved inside?

Dry fits, top done, and other follies

Dry fit….meh….One frame needed a hammer to get into place…two frames needed the router ran, as the pins were lopsided….
Wood Building Engineering Toolroom Industry

Added a few clamps, to pull thing together a bit better..
Wood Building material Beam Gas Hardwood

Sides were trying to cup a bit…Let this set a day….while I did some figuring….

OK, today…hauled any and all clamps that were upstairs to the shop ( yardsale finds) and a few other goodies…
Got the panel for the top of the case, cut to size….once all the clamps were stowed out of the way..
Wood Gas Garden tool Metal Composite material

Some here..

Some there. The big red c clamp was busy….I had to trim the panel to size..
Wood Machine tool Engineering Machine Toolroom

No fancy guides, this time…just split the line free-handed with the circular saw. Which left a small panel as a leftover..
Wood Wood stain Plank Flooring Hardwood

Which I marked a few lines on. These will become the kickers. Kickers keep a drawer from tipping down when you slide the drawer almost all the way out… They don't need to be too perfect, either. Babied the bandsaw to make a few rip cuts..
Wood Hardwood Natural material Plank Wood stain

Needed 5..but it always nice to have an extra one…Stanley #2246 mitre saw to cut these to length
Wood Wood stain Natural material Plank Composite material

Chose the 5 best…left the sixth for some other day..kickers get installed ( once I can get to the frames, again) via a dab of glue, and a screw at each end. Screws need counter sunk, to keep from hitting the drawer….point of the screw doesn't need to show, either…got out the usual suspects..

One drill for the pilot hole, another for the countersink….would take too long to keep changing bits, right?
Wood Stonemason's hammer Tool Metalworking hand tool Gas

1" screw….just enough to latch on to the frame…

And countersunk out of the way. Was starting to get a might too warm in the shop…..hmmm..

Set this saw up to cut 45s….to make the corner blocks….something is missing in the background?

Corner block…will use these (4 of them) to attach the top…..where is the fan?

Doesn't get any simpler than this…Sabresaw had "issues with the cut..

Was getting way too warm to work any more in the shop….tomorrow's first job is to bring that fan back into the shop….I swept the dust up, and closed the shop for the day. Had enough fun. The real FUN will be next time…trying to glue and clamp this mess together….and keep it squared up…a dozen or so clamps..vs..2 hands?

The cussing will be epic. Stay tuned…

Wood Gas Engineering Metalworking hand tool Composite material

One drill for the pilot hole, another for the countersink….would take too long to keep changing bits, right?
Wood Stonemason's hammer Tool Metalworking hand tool Gas

1" screw….just enough to latch on to the frame…
Tool Wood Hand tool Metalworking hand tool Gas

And countersunk out of the way. Was starting to get a might too warm in the shop…..hmmm..
Wood Tool Workbench Machine tool Saw

Set this saw up to cut 45s….to make the corner blocks….something is missing in the background?
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank Lumber

Corner block…will use these (4 of them) to attach the top…..where is the fan?
Didn't like the squared corners on the top..got the sabresaw out…after a high tech radius tool was used..
Wood Automotive tire Wood stain Gas Hardwood

Doesn't get any simpler than this…Sabresaw had "issues with the cut..
Table Wood Gas Desk Hardwood

A little assembly...

Well…the cussing wasn't quite at Drill Instructor level…..more like Squid level…..I made sure that fan was hauled to the shop, this time…
Laundry room Clothes dryer Washing machine Wood Automotive tire

And set on "HIGH"...goal was to get the case up onto the empty bench. Slide the loose side off the frames. Figures, had to turn the case around, had one frame that wanted to stick….with the frames still sitting there, I could attach the kickers…with a spot of glue and a screw at each end. I then slid each frame out, added the glue into the grooves… and slid the frames back in. Applied glue to the pins on the other end of the frames…then slid the "loose" side back in place….had a hammer handy, just in case…

Grabbed a couple pipe clamps, and clamped the bottom of the case….just enough that I could lid (barely) the mess off the bench and set it down…on about the flattest section of the shop's floor…and add more clamps..
Wood Flooring Gas Hardwood Composite material

Now, the kickers do not have to be perfectly centered and square….all they do is keep a drawer from tipping down, when you pull it out. Bottom two kickers are more to support the bottom rail of the face frame..
Wood Building Flooring Lumber Landscape

Needed a couple extra clamps…sides wanted to cup a bit in the middle..
Wood Rectangle Natural material Hardwood Lumber

Got this far, case did not rock…joints looked tight…got out some toys….and used the bandsaw. Had 4 corner blocks to make and install….45 degree cuts on the ends. drill a pilot hole, then countersink..
Wheel Wood Tire Tool Automotive tire

Used the first one as a pattern, made the other three…more screws and glue..
Wood Natural material Hardwood Wood stain Plank

Later, after this mess has set a day or two…I'll drill a slotted hole into each corner block….so I can attach the top.

Some of those pipe clamps were a bit long…too long to leave sticking out into the shop. Things weighs a ton, too..
Somehow managed to turn the mess around, and stash it out of the way..
Wood Hardwood Flooring Lumber Luggage and bags

Hard to believe..but…I even have a few extra pipe clamps on hand….been buying a bunch at yard sales this year..

Hopefully, I can get some more lumber, do a back for the case, and a face frame….then work on three drawers..need to buy a few knobs for the drawers…and maybe install the top? May run the router around the top's edge, again.

Stay tuned…

Face frame, and a back

Trying to get caught up….from a "Lost Weekend" and a VERY BAD Monday…..somehow managed to get a back installed…
Furniture Wood Table Rectangle Wood stain

The way the case was…26" wide..vs..24" wide panel…..laid the panel sideways ( 48" wide?) and cut one panel to fit.
Will get the other section in a moment….you will notice I have the face frame installed. Just 6 sticks of pine..
Wood Natural material Hardwood Wood stain Rectangle

Glued and screwed in place. I used counter-bored holes, and will fill them with matching Pine plugs. Have a Veritas Tapered Plug Cutter that cuts 3/8" tapered plugs…..from face grain board. Of course, went to dig out the 3/8" forstner bit to drill the counter-bores…NADA….had to go out and BUY a new bit…..going to be one of those weekends..later, I installed the rest of the back panel…..had to fine tune the cut with a plane…
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank Lumber

A look inside. Glue, nails, and a few screws, to secure the pack panels. Then worked on drawer guides..
Ruler Office ruler Wood Wood stain Nail

Just scrap 1×2s….didn't need to go the full depth….3/4s of the way was fine. The webframe for the top drawer was a tad too skinny….added a bit more width for the drawer to slide on. those two needed to go the entire way..
Wood Floor Wood stain Flooring Hardwood

Here is a view. As far as I can tell, the other frames will be wide enough….barely….I can add runners if need be.
Wood Gas Lumber Hardwood Machine

Even had to hoist the case back onto the bench, to better install the bottom guides…even did some rough sanding (180 grit) around the front…couldn't reach the top..
Wood Wood stain Floor Flooring Beam

And was getting ready to do the plugs…..glue bottle came up..empty. Figures. Left the case sit….then lost a weekend. Was a good thing the case was on the bench….had a heavy rain storm come through today…..and there was a couple shallow creeks going across the shop floor. I did manage to get a new bottle of glue, and 6 knobs today. The way this Monday was going….I think that will do….no sawdust was disturbed on Monday.

Maybe Tuesday…I can get back to work…for two whole days…..van is in the shop..radiator troubles…just one of those Mondays.

Maybe try to build a few drawers….only need three? Stay tuned…

Plugging along

Was a very busy day, yesterday…..so I'll post this in a couple episodes today. First off, needed to get the case off the bench. To do that, I needed to make a bunch of plugs, install them…and then trim them all flush….

Veritas 3/8" Tapered Plug Cutter..

It does have a bad habit of biting off a plug, now and then.
Wood Gas Tool Machine Fastener

I try to avoid any knots, as well….a pin knot got "plugged", anyway…Cutter ate 2, chewed up a third, and that pin knot got a fourth….still was able to get just enough done, to fill 29 holes. I try to cut an extra one or two, just in case…

"Tools" for this job…at least the install. Screwdriver is to pop each plug loose..

Once a plug is loose, I coat the narrow end with glue, and then hammer each plug into place…

I pay attention to the grain, and try to match the plug's to the surrounding area…takes a while..
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank Composite material

and I had just enough plugs, for a change..
Automotive tire Motor vehicle Vehicle Vehicle registration plate Automotive exterior

Even one left over!.....While the glue set up, I went upstairs, and hauled a 1Ă—8 x 8' plank down to the shop, as it will be the next item on the "To-Do List". Then grabbed a sharp chisel, and that hammer
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Plank Lumber

And working from the 1st plug installed through to the last one, trimmed each plug flush..
Table Wood Ruler Tool Office ruler

Between the chisel and some 180 grit sandpaper, the plugs seemed to vanish….there is a plug sitting right in front of the chisel's edge….
Then I could set the case back down on the floor, since there are a few dry spots, now.
A 6' Skil circular saw to break down that plank…..cutting out the worst sections.
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Varnish Table

Here is 3 out of the 4. All are headed for the burn pile, later. Saw was a little wobbly ( may have been the Operator?) so I needed to square the ends a bit better..
Saw Hand tool Wood Tool Metalworking hand tool

Then try to fit a Front and two sides into the case….Once they were cut for length….all three needed a strip ripped for width..
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Flooring Plank

Bandsaw WAS still able to run, was able to rip most of the excess off..then the jack planes to smooth the rip cuts.
There was also a part for the drawer's back. cut to length, and then for width…

Junior Jack for the Front, until it fit the opening..
Table Wood Wood stain Hardwood Flooring

Then a regular jack plane for the ganged up sides

Until they fit. The back was also jointed, but will wait til later to be fitted

Then set up the Stanley #45…have a groove to do..

one drawer fitted, another begun

Got the first drawer out of the clamps yesterday…..planes and the beltsander to clean things up. Had to keep working on the sides…drawer was binding a bit….finally got it to almost close….wax on the moving parts helped with that last inch….added a pair of knobs, so I could at least pull the drawer back out…

Hauled both 1×8 planks to the shop. Circular saw to cut out the very bad spots….

A regular Knot Farm.

Somehow managed to get enough "good" parts for most of the 2 drawers needing built….may have to buy a small, CLEAR short board…..some knots won't quite work…

Have to use things like these, as the bandsaw is out for repairs..

This doesn't look too good.

Last night, after the shop cooled down, went to work on Drawer #2….ends needed squared up on the drawer's front..

Well, this way didn't work out….went the the mitre box…

Takes a bit, cutting the 1×8 on the flat, but at least it will be square. Needed to remove a bit off one edge, until the blank fit in the opening….jack plane was used, this time around..

Won't be any see-through shavings, here…takes too long.

The other half of the shavings are on the floor. Once the blank fit into the opening, I jigged up for the Stanley 45, again. Drawer bottom groove..then I can lay out pins..

Will have to clean out that Pitch Pocket….

Hmmm, seemed to have an extra pin? Spacings do look a bit better, though…Backsaw, Disston No. 4

Used nice, long strokes, cuts fast. Imagine how many strokes a short, "Dovetail saw" would take….

Clamped to the bench, chop 1/2 way, flip over, and finish up on this side….repeat the steps, until both ends are done…..

Chopping Crew…
Went to use one of the sides…same routine with the non-square ends. Then marked how much to remove for the side to slide into it's spot in the case…..I am not using a plane for 1/4" removal….clamped the side to the bench, right over the opened vise. Circular saw to just leave the line. A pass or two to smooth the marks.

Stood one end of the front blank on top of the better end of the side blank..and traced the pins..

Backsaw to cut, leaving the lines. Cut are on the waste side of the lines. An extra cut in the middle of each, helps with the chopping. Again, chop from both faces. Then try a dry fit….

Couple hits with the mallet to start it…..almost 10pm? Time to close up for the day.

Maybe after Lunch, today…I can get a little more done? We'll see…
Stay tuned

A second drawer is done

Just one more to do.
Got busy yesterday….rest of the dovetails for the (NOW) top drawer were done. Had an issue with a knot right where the dado was going through…

Was a bit rough on the Stanley #39. Mitre saw wasn't cutting the walls level..was hard to see the far side.
Got out a panel saw, to level the cuts..

Last of the dovetails are done

Still need to buy a board for the back of the drawer. Needed to clear off the bench, first..

Motor vehicle Wood Engineering Toolroom Gas

The shavings are from sizing the front of the drawer. Still needed a couple more "swipes" for the final fit..later
Even cleaned the floor, BEFORE I got started….still had to clean it a few more times. Got moving around just after 2pm in the shop. First, the drawer front needed a groove milled. Benchdog at one end..

Wood Office ruler Hardwood Wood stain Plank

A jig to keep the board from sliding around..
Wood Tool Metalworking hand tool Hand tool Auto part

Then a screw to tighten things into the dog…
Wood Gas Engineering Fastener Auto part

Screw is at an angle, and is inline with the dog. Had to open the leg vise a bit, fence on the Stanley 45 was hitting it at the start..
Wood Motor vehicle Gas Machine Auto part

Groove is a hair under 3/8" deep. 1/4" wide….and a 1/4" from the edge of the bottom of the board….Then, lay out for the dovetail pins…as I do pins first..
Automotive tire Wood Floor Flooring Wood stain

And seemed to pick up another "extra" pin? Tails and pins are getting close to the same size. Lowered the board in the vise, and waxed up the saw..
Wood Naval architecture Engineering Composite material Machine

Just an old candle. Saw the lines, chop the waste from both sides…..transfer the lines to the other end. I used a combo square…set it for each spot, transfer that to the other end….keep doing each mark until all are done…
(Later, when marking the tails, I mixed up, and used both ends, the wrong one first, then the correct end…wasn't any real change)

Repeat for the other end's pins. Stand the "Pin board" up, and mark out the locations….marking which spots will be waste…..and saw on the waste side of the lines…..Before I chisel…I use a square and a Utility Knife..
Wood Saw Hand tool Crosscut saw Tool

Whether with the pins or the tails, I use a Knife Wall….gives the chisel a line to stop at. About three good passes does the trick. Before I could transfer to mark out the tails..I needed to size the two drawer sides, including cutting the ends for square on the Mitre box saw…
Wood Machine tool Gas Engineering Toolroom

As they were a tad wavy on the ends…also made sure they were the same length. The LONG blank had a big knot on each end….HAD. Then both were sized for width, so they don't bind in the opening..
Wood Cat Tool Gas Machine tool

Jack plane was just about the right size to pare this down…..got both sides close for width…then ganged them up..
Motor vehicle Wood Gas Machine tool Automotive wheel system

And a couple passes until they matched each other. Then lay out for the tails, saw and chop, again..
Wheel Tire Automotive tire Wood Fender

The saw and my elbow were getting a work out. Have learned to sit slightly to one side, when chopping things out…some pieces tend to fly straight back out. Had one chisel give up…and ran away….right onto the floor, edge first…we have more. Time for the dry fits? Had one or two pins crumble during the chopping..
Wood Composite material Hardwood Gas Lumber

A spot of glue, and a few shavings to fill that in…other end turned out a little bit better..
Wood Gas Hardwood Wood stain Plywood

Went to slide this assemble into it's new home…..front was a hair too wide, yet….back to the bench, a few more passes with the jack plane…then try again..

Sides still need a groove milled. Still needs a back made, and the dados to house it. And saw a drawer bottom to size…...THEN I can glue the last drawer up. Then come back, clean and fill…and install two knobs.

Stay tuned….

Have the board to make the back of that drawer..now. Might be able to get that drawer glued up later today?

have also picked up a pulley for the "new" motor for the bandsaw…...might get started rebuilding that old bandsaw later…..anyone want a blog about that?

This little blog was also about how I set up to do some of the tasks in building one of these dressers…other people may build a bit differently…..

Last drawer done, and a PIP

Board was brought to the shop, yesterday…
Wood Rectangle Wood stain Hardwood Gas

Two cuts were needed to be done, to get this done to size…

Once those were done, and the back set aside for a bit….I knocked the other three parts back apart, had grooves to mill for the drawer's bottom to go into…

Since these were the last of the grooves I needed milled, I could do something different for the dados
Wood Gas Engineering Electronic engineering Audio equipment

Made a new jig…..set up the Stanley 45 as a dado plane..
Wood Engineering Composite material Machine Hardwood

Turns out that a #18 cutter was a match for the width of the back.

To start the plane, I drag it backwards a few (3) times, to get the pair of nickers to bite….have had issues with "blowouts" where the plane enters and exits the cut, so..

Backsaw makes a few cuts, down to the depth of the dado, only at the start and the exit.

Then run the plane until the depth stop hits…..

And check the fit. I also bevel the back corners on my drawers….easy to insert them into the case.

While each side was in the jig..a pilot hole from the dado side, flip over, then do the countersinks.

Once I had the plywood bottom cut to size…glue, clamps, a square..and a few screws were used

Let this sit a few hours, til the glue set up enough….

Hang the drawer from the vise…work on getting these..

And install the two knobs….Got the router set up.
