« Part 4: Grooves & Dry Fits Part 5 of Bed Frame, out of Pine series Part 6: Headboard work, test fits »

Cussing has been about….Marine D.I. first day level….but, we getting a few things done.
Top of the posts. Decided to at least do the footboard ones…and work out any “kinks”

First off, wanted a bead detail….Stanley 45 was still set up from doing those grooves, changed out the cutters to use a bead cutter about the same width….yep, it was quite sharp…never felt a thing, but there was fresh DNA appearing on the pine. Plan was to do just the outside faces of the posts….that WAS the plan….got to checking both posts…and had to go ahead and do all four faces…grrrr. Bandaid for the finger…

Next, seems the tops will get a bevel to them. Set up a saw and a couple guide lines..

First test cut wasn’t too bad, saw was set at 22.5 degrees, but why the second cut seemed to be “off”?

Ah, that’s why. Angle lock had worked loose…reset, screwdriver to help “lock” it down..

Needs a bit of clean up. One post done at the top, which left the bottom of the post…

This time around, a block plane could make a small bevel for the “foot” of the post…

A little sanding should clean that right up.

Got the second post done. Clamped things up in the vise, and sanded each side to 180 grit. Includes removing the red spots….
Cleared the bench..

Hauled a 2×10 x 8’ plank to the shop…had to cut it to 67-1/4” long….Cussing level was rising…planks also needed notched on the ends for the posts to slide on at…

Handsaws and chisel to make the notches, making sure they were the same, top and bottom. Those nice, counter-bored holes? Wrong spot…they needed to be out near the edge…so, a new line of holes were done. glue spread, and a clamp added. #12 screws were used..

Going to plug all the holes when done, what’s three extra..screws had heads a bit too big for a 3/8” hole..grinder to narrow the heads a bit…..wire wheel on grinder snagged a cord, to my plugged in beltsander…..yep, breaker blew, GFI outlet popped…unplugged the cord, reset the breakers…..got the second post attached…this time I only need three holes….Set it aside to dry..

I had to make sure the notches for the side rails matched the headboard ones…

Rails go to the inside. I suppose tomorrow, I can cut the side rails to length, and pre-drill the holes for the lags.

Until the padded panel is done, not much I can do to the headboard, well , maybe do the Bevel & Bead routine.

Will remove the clamps tomorrow, and clean the footboard up, may get a few other details done to it. Boss has approved of the post’s treatments….need to sand things smooth, and IF she decides on a stain, may add that. Then it can go upstairs…I need the room to work on the head board….

Stay tuned….
