« Part 9: Catching things up, face frame installed Part 10 of Stepback Cupboard in Pine series Part 11: Top is done, case assembled »

Ok, got the 1×8 x 8’ plank to the shop, somehow….had the bench cleared off, and ready to do a bit of work…

Saw was needed to make a few cuts….needed three pieces 27” long…lay out a cut line..

Making sure the line was hanging over the end far enough to miss the bench vise….

Was trying NOT to include this into one of the pieces..

But, to get rid of this ugly thing, I had to use it’s little brother..

We have ways…..the first two pieces were decent enough, and almost wide enough..

That I could have just added a 1×4….but, the one I had in that size, had a huge knot in the edge, right where I didn’t want a knot to be…..Used that 1×4 to mark the 1×8 piece, and then rip the waste off on the bandsaw..

Panel measures 3/4×27” x 18”...I figure by the time I get the edges jointed for a glue up, the front overhang will match the side overhang. As for any leftovers from that 1×8?

Just two two chunks….might need some 1×1s out of these….sans knots. Which brings me up to today’s little bit of work..

The 1×8 was sold as “rough sawn”...mainly on one face…A bit of work with the handplanes to smooth, and flattened the face grain, and joint the edges…that #8 was getting a bit heavy…switched to a jack plane..

Much lighter, and a bit easier to push along. Finally got all three parts ready to glue up…

3 pipe clamps should do the trick…will let this sit a while….then clean it up.
As for the planes in use? Just the Basic Starter Set..

A jointer plane, a Jack plane, and a smoother plane…..add a block plane and be good to go.

Will have to add a runner system ( out of wood, of course) so the drawer has something to slide on…needs guide strips, too, to keep it centered. May add those either before or after the top is installed. Then maybe I can build drawer? Well, that catches up this weeks adventures….stay tuned for the next exciting episodes…
