OK
Bandit there you are again, I was getting concerned as to your state of health.
I hadnt seen anything for a while.

Good to see you are A OK.

Nice work on the panels.

I take it you know your router would make quick work of panels!

I did some "playing about" myself this week making curved doors or more correctly just one curved door.

Hey, glue ups!

Today, was much better. Even remembered to turn the shop light and the fan on! Goal was to get at least the front assembly glued up, and a start on the back assembly..

Last two mortises were chopped…did a few fittings with the rest of the parts. There was another panel glued up….took it out of the clamps, and used the two completed raised panels to mark out for size…..blank was an inch shorter than I wanted…..decided a wider center stile would work….set these parts aside for a while. Time for glue and clamps..and cussing…
Wood Gas Hardwood Machine Lumber

I had a few panels to glue up. I jointed the edges first, spread a bead of glue, and then clamped things up. Cauls to keep thing flat..almost. Set two of these aside…
Wood Composite material Gas Engineering Machine

This was the first one. Second one is in the picture above. Those out of the way…time for the main event on the fight card…..
Wood Composite material Gas Metal Machine

Couple of pipe clamps, an F clamp, and then the last pipe clamp. Used a box end wrench to help turn the screws on the clamps…once everything was tightly in place. I used a few small nails, to "pin" the joints, on the "inside"
Wood Floor Rectangle Flooring Wood stain

Where they won't show. Set this aside….
Wood Road surface Gas Hardwood Flooring

I had other chores to do….had to re-adjust the fence on the Stanley #45, to get it centered on a stile..
Wood Gas Bumper Machine Automotive exterior

This style of fence has a "micro-adjust" bolt. Unlock the small one, use the larger one to move the fence a hair or three, towhere the cutter is centered. Jig to hold the center stile still long enough..
Wood Automotive tire Motor vehicle Engineering Machine

Both edges get a groove. Later, I'll cut tenons on the ends. Set this aside. Panels for the back's raised panels had a problem…
Wood Flooring Wood stain Floor Plank

One of the two boards was a bit thicker….too thick, actually….hmmm, we have ways
Table Wood Floor Wood stain Hardwood

A Stanley No. 5c Cambered Jack plane. Used across the grain, to scrub off the excess lumber….lots of big shavings…
Wood Floor Flooring Hardwood Plank

You should see what was on the floor… A beltsander and a smooth plane to finish flattening things out. Did both faces on both panels..whew! Back started to act up, time to quit for today….3 hours was about enough, anyway.

Need to haul that 1×4 plank to the shop..tomorrow. Need to make a few parts with it. Maybe raise those two freshly flattened panels and see about a glue up of the back assembly….maybe? Then figure out the end panels.

Lid will just be a breadboard edged lid. Might get a little fancy with it? We'll see. Until the next exciting episode

Stay tuned…

Another glue up, with problems

Thought I could get another glue up done…..
Wood Gas Metal Hardwood Auto part

Like before, I milled a few tenons. Shoulder cuts on the mitre box, cheek cuts on the bandsaw. That shoulder plane helped tune a couple tenons…
Motor vehicle Wood Bumper Automotive exterior Gas

Got out the old mortise jig….It was set up for these 3/4" thick rails. Chopped the center mortises in the rails…stiles are 4/4 thick, had to re-adjust the jig…..to chop a few mortises…
Wood Bumper Automotive exterior Gas Wood stain

BTW, Dog holes are an excellent way to keep chisels from rolling off the bench. A few test fits….
Wood Engineering Machine Hardwood Easel

Wasn't all THAT bad….one panel seemed to be a problem….should have fixed it here..but…..
Wood Composite material Gas Automotive tire Building material

Went ahead and glued it up, anyway…...was getting in a rush, I guess….bad idea.

There was an almost 1/4" gap between a rail, and the stile….seemed the panel was a bit…off. I went back to the shop to check on the glue up…....wasn't happy. Out of the clamps it came. Hammer to knock the stile off. Panel ripped out of the assembly…..Framing Square to check…..one edge was way off. Gap was from being 1/8" too long at the top, and 1/4" too long at the bottom of the panel. Other edge was square? Hmmm…Bandsaw to remove the offending part. Plane to re-do the bevel…..re-assemble the thing, with more glue…set aside to dry..
Wood Gas Shipping box Plywood Composite material

Look Ma, no gaps!. Hate re-dos. Ok ( BTW, Gap was in the lower right corner) Since all but one clamp was still on one of the end panels….might as well work on it..
Wood Engineering Motor vehicle Tool Machine

Planes and squares, and Jigs. Square showed the panel needed trued up. One of the two boards was a bit thicker. Band saw to square the panel up, that #5c jack plane to level the faces out… It also hogged most of the waste off the bevel…
Wood Composite material Gas Machine Building material

Then a #4c to get the bevel close. Followed by the "smoother" #4. Got the edge to where the test piece would slip fit….
Table Wood Automotive tire Gas Flooring

Flip the panel over and make a "back bevel" like this. I could run the smooth plane around a lot easier..
Wood Gas Flooring Machine Metal

Got one end done, rotate around to do the other end, as I do the end grain edges first.

Figured I had enough "fun" for one day….both ends were done. Will need to adjust the jig to hold the panel to where I can bevel the edge grain sides. Maybe today?

Maybe then, I can figure out the frame to house the panel? And…not have to re-glue it…

Stay tuned….

Much better day

Even got a few things done! Right after this morning's Blog post, went to the shop. Had the panel to be raised..
Wood Composite material Automotive exterior Gas Hood

Once that was done….started on the frames to hold the raised panels….Had some "leftovers" took those to the existing panels…..marked for length. Marked for width at 1-1/8" wide. Set up the resaw jig. Ran all four stiles through. Then ganged them up, after cutting a foot detail on one end..
Wood Composite material Machine Hardwood Metal

#4 smooth plane was still out, used it to remove the saw marks. Flipped them over..
Wood Hardwood Gas Lumber Machine tool

And worked on this side…..used the raised panel to set up to cut the rails to size..
Wood Hardwood Composite material Plank Rectangle

Seems the old center stile was about the right size….used the mitre saw to cut four blanks..
Wood Tool Carpenter Engineering Workbench

Used the last of the 1×4 Birdseye Maple….
Wood Flooring Automotive exterior Typesetting Metal

Reset the resaw jig to the width needed. Which meant it was time to get groovy..
Wood Motor vehicle Building Engineering Automotive exterior

Needed to build a jig to hold the rails still long enough…
Wood Naval architecture Composite material Gas Engineering

Used a "new" candle to help the plane slide along better..
Wood Composite material Lumber Metal Engineering

After each groove was milled, I tried something else..
Automotive tire Wood Motor vehicle Engineering Saw

Little 60-1/2 block plane to bevel the insides of the groove, just a little bit….
Wood Gas Auto part Machine Machine tool

Seems to help the panel settle into the groove…
Rails were done, needed to groove the stiles…needed a different jig, since the stiles were on the thin (1") side…
Wood Gas Engineering Machine Metal

Again the block plane made a few bevels. Soon enough, I had all the grooves made..
Wood Hardwood Plank Composite material Lumber

I got the other panel out of the clamps, used the first one to trim this one to match..
Wood Floor Flooring Plank Hardwood

This one looks like it will be "FUN" to do the raised panel stuff to….
Decided to at least get one frame ready for glue…or try to….Needed tenons milled. Got them marked out, and made the shoulder cuts on the mitre saw..
Wood Gas Tints and shades Rectangle Stairs

Then used the bandsaw to make the cheek cuts..
Wood Road surface Flooring Floor Hardwood

Then got out the mortise jig. Had to reset it to 3/4" width….and attached it to the bench..
Wood Hardwood Lumber Engineering Machine

Was past Lunchtime ( 2:30 !) so I closed up until after Suppertime tonight….Maybe I can chop a few mortises, and do a glue up. Trying to avoid working on Mondays. Hope this glue up goes a little bit better…

Stay tuned….

Getting assembled...

Not moving the best, this week, forced to take things a bit easy…..
Ok, to get caught up with this project….
Wood Gas Composite material Machine Engineering

Got the fourth panel all glued up….and even did a test fit…
Wood Hardwood Gas Composite material Flooring

Which left the problem of the glue joints at the corners….took yesterday off…wasn't feeling too good..

Today, after a decent rest, went SLOWLY to the shop…trying to keep the trips up and down the stairs as low as I can…..Set up an end panel in the vise…

Of getting things "squared away". Millers Falls #14 Jack plane seemed to be about the right size for this job. Needed this square, for the next item on the list..

I WAS going to use this 3/16" Match cutter, to mill a tongue along the edges of the end panels….wood was a tad too wide, would have left a whisker along the edges…...there is another cutter…

I have the 1/4" Match cutter for the Stanley No. 45….it at least is wider than the boards I was going over..

Ok, once I figured out which way the grain was actually going….I could start at the far end..

And work my way back. Once a bit of the tongue appeared, I rubbed the "new" candle along the sides of the tongue. I figure the cutter will remove almost all the wax, after a few trips..
Automotive tire Tread Wheel Synthetic rubber Bicycle tire

Finally got four tongues milled…but, I wanted them to fit into stopped grooves, which meant they needed trimmed back a bit…around 1-1/2" or so..

Hand tool Stonemason's hammer Metalworking hand tool Wood Tool

Backsaw to make a saw cut, chisel to pare away the waste….set these aside, clear the top of the bench, and lay one of the front/back panels on the bench. With the "inside" facing up. Dug up a 1/4" router bit. And the rest of the contraption's parts..
Saw Wood Tool Workbench Gas

Noisey, messy thing. Still, about the easiest way to make a stopped groove. Once I marked a stop/start line, and remembered which way to run the router along an edge…..and set the fence for where the groove needed to be..
Wood Brick Wood stain Composite material Hardwood

Groove is also "stopped" about the same at the top. First groove was easy…second groove….not so much, got about an inch or so ploughed out…..
Door Wood Table Rectangle Wood stain

Never heard a sound. Hate when that happens. Dug out a few more 1/4" bits….(I would pick the dullest one first)
Wood Wood stain Plank Flooring Hardwood

second, third , and fourth cuts…tried to burn a bit….gave each a second pass to clean them out. Dry fits as I went along..
Wood Flooring Floor Composite material Hardwood

They were a might tight…..decided to go ahead and glue the mess up…

Diagonal to pull things square…well, a little past square, so it "springs back" into square, when I remove the clamp.

Will let this set awhile….i went upstairs, and took the rest of the day off, other than peeling dried glue off of my fingers. Tomorrow? Might try either to build the bottom, make a small box, or work on the lid.

Stay tuned…..

A bottom framed, a puppy died, a lid done...

Had a little 3 month old puppy in the house…..she came down sick the other day….the next morning she passed away, before we could even get her to the vet…..thinking something poisoned her out in the yard….

Ok, I wasn't in a very good mood when I returned to the shop…

Hammer and chisel to shape the feet a bit, to at least blend them together….
Ripped a bunch of maple scraps into 1×1s…and made a frame of sorts..

To support the plywood bottom. Had to "toe-nail a few spots…

Otherwise, just nails and glue to hold the frame in place…..

No matter how well I marked this panel for size, I still had to trim it down to fit…..glue and screws to attach it to the frame….was getting a bit fed up….then tried the lid…

Too long, and not wide enough….trip to Menards for one more plank of Maple….and even found a deal!

Got this for $5. the plank was $2 less than the last one I bought, and a foot longer! Cut off a 31" long chunk from the plank. Check to see IF I needed to joint and edge…

Not really needed. I did need a few cauls, to keep it halfway flat….This morning, the clamps came off..

Hmm…still too long, and now a tad too wide….we have ways..

Hey, it IS a vintage saw…a framer square to mark each end, then trimmed for length….When I first tried to rip for width…one end was wider? Ok, measure from one edge, make a mark..go to the other end, and do the same…then dig out a straightedge..

Called a Tinner's Rule. Marked a new line. and ripped that.

Dug out the old router table….then another chunk of maple was rough cut to length, and then ripped down the center. I had two breadboard ends. Needed to mill a dovetail along one edge..

Got both done….Then I needed to remove the bit, and install it in another router, sooo (we like to move it, move it…) and set up a fence…a few times..

First time was a hair off. After ripping the mess off, I re-checked WHERE it was cutting, and made a adjustment…
I also clamped a bit of scrap along the far side, to help support the router's fat …bottom..

Slid one of the bread boards in place….pulled it back out, a few dabs of glue, and drive the board through. Flip the lid around, and repeat. sat it on the case..

Kind of plain jane…breadboards are a tad long..
Got bored this evening, no puppy to play with…meander back to the shop. Picked up a pint can of varnish (empty) and laid out a few curves. Bandsaw was fun to cut the curves….

Sander to remove the saw marks, and fair the curve a bit. Laid the lid on the bench..

And found a lot of "high" spots where two boards didn't quite match. The center of the lid had also cupped a bit…we have ways..

a cambered Jack plane, to remove the worst of the spots. Had to do this to both faces. A smooth plane was run along the edge grain areas, to remove saw marks. Finally was able to use the smooth plane on the faces..

To clean things up. set the lid back on the case..

Looks much better, now? need to do the same things to the case, to get it all nice and finish ready. Might even install the hinges. Un-decided about a little box on the inside….may do without it, and use some hardware, instead…..stay tuned….

Cardio for the day…Anyway, the rip fence worked great for a rip cut…not so great for resaw. Wound up almost freehanding the NOW 1×3 through….trying for 3/8" thick slabs..

Then the handplanes came out….Poplar was 1/2" along one edge….3/8" thick along the other….Maple parts had a bit of wave to them, and saw marks…we have ways..

To flatten the Poplar, a cambered jack brought the high side down to match the low side..then the smooth plane could clean up..

There are 4 drywall screws holding things in place…just the heads of them. Set a bit below the thickness of the panels, so I would miss them when a plane goes by. Screws are in the bench, NOT the panels. Maple parts were just planed with the smooth plane.

Dry fit….needs a bit of joinery to connect the corners….bottom will get a rebate around all four edges.

Ok, Doctor Visit…Biopsy from the right forearm….Decided to just putter around a bit..
Laid out a few tools.

Will need a bit of fine tuning….maybe tomorrow, I can get the other three done? Arm was getting sore..time to quit

Maybe tomorrow, I can do a bit more? Stay tuned…

It's looking really good. Mind telling me what blade you are using in the Craftsman band saw? I get so frustrated with mine that I want to chuck it, but I won't be able to get another one for a few years or more.

Hinges, rails, and dovetails

Hinges I had bought for this project…looked a bit wimpy….needed something a bit …different. Some yard sale finds gave me a few hinges to try. One "leaf" was a bit too long, though. Grinder to remove the "excess" metal..
Brown Wood Rectangle Font Brick

One is a before, the other three are after the grinder work. Sat the lid in the vise, laid out the locations for the hinges, drilled a few pilot holes….
Wood Gas Engineering Machine Metal

Once all three were done, I set the lid aside, cleared a spot on the bench for the case to set on. Clamped the lid into place, and more pilot holes. Finally was able to set the case on the floor, to see how the hinges would work

Seems to be about right. I then cut two rails to length, and marked where three holes would go…
Wood Rectangle Wood stain Flooring Plank

Then pilot holes were drilled, and then countersunk a bit..
Wood Machine tool Gas Machine Fastener

Using these two "cordless" drills. Ok, cleared the work area, and set up the best tool in the shop..
Table Wood Cabinetry Gas Stool

Where I can sit and work for a while…..easier than standing all the time…
Wood Motor vehicle Gas Bumper Machine

I marked out about 5 pins on the end of a board, and used my "dovetail saw" to cut them out. Then set up a chopping block..
Wood Gas Automotive tire Machine tool Machine

To protect the bench's top from chisel marks. Once the waste was chopped out, I used these pins to lay out the tails…seems to be easier that way, for me. bandsaw to remove the waste….cutting inside the lines. Then a dry fit
Wood Composite material Machine tool Gas Machine

Hmmm, then on to the next corner. and then the last corner…..dry fit all four sides, and placed the panel for the bottom on top..
Wood Motor vehicle Gas Machine tool Machine

I was just about ready to flip this over, mark how much to rebate the edges of the bottom…Boss says she needs to go to the store…..grrrrrr, time to close things up..

Maybe Sunday, I can get something done? Stay tuned…

Looking nice.

When I had a concrete floor I found an anti fatigue mat saved my feet. I don't remember where I got mine, but I see HFT has them for $9.99. The recent reviews are very positive reviews, but maybe you can check them out in the store. Only an hour drive. :)

Tray completed

Monday….got the sides glued up….
.
Wood Rectangle Gas Hardwood Wood stain

Traced the bottom panel, after the sides came back out of the clamps,,,bandsaw to remove the excess. Press fit into place. helped square the sides up…then just some nails, no glue, to hold the bottom in place..

Wood Building material Wall Rectangle Composite material

Then used the tray to mark how far down to install the rails. Three screws each, no glue…then a tes drive..
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Flooring Wood stain

Then the important part…does the lid close, without hitting the tray?
Table Wood Cabinetry Drawer Wood stain

Got to thinking, dangerous I know….that the tray looked a bit too…plain..
Wood Hardwood Metal Machine Wood stain

So, I set up the old Stanley #45 with a #23 (1/4") bead cutter. Placed the tray into the vise, and started at the far end..
Wood Automotive exterior Bumper Wood stain Hardwood

I should have started with the shorter ends, had a bit of trouble with the pin on the end….worked my way back, until one side was beaded..
Wood Wood stain Plank Hardwood Lumber

Then unclamp, rotate and do the short ends…
Brown Wood Rectangle Flooring Hardwood

Which left a corner detail…finally got all four sides beaded..
Wood Tool Machine tool Gas Composite material

Didn't really need any sanding….placed the tray back into the Blanket chest..

So…other than a finish, and a chain to hold the lid….this MIGHT be about done?

You're seem to be great at keeping moving forward with your projects.

How much time do you tend to spend in the shop each day?

A chain and a brace for the lid

A trip to Walmart…..bought a packet of chain & hooks…16'. Was the shortest they had. More for hanging a flower pot, but….I only needed a wee bit. Rest can still go to hang a flower pot….

Set the id opened to where it looked about right…eyeballed the length needed, and grabbed the bolt cutters to trim the chain to length. Two screws, set into pilot holes, to hold the chain….that was the "easy part"...

So, how to hold the lid from falling down? Somehow, the store bought metal things just didn't "feel" right….Had a 3/4" x 3/4" stick of maple scrap, that I was using as part of a jig…..even had a screw hole on one end…

Bandsaw to round the end with the screw hole. Take the blank to the chest…..lean the lid forward a hair, and mark an angle to cut…..there was still quite a bit left over….needed a catch. Make a small "D" shaped button, and drilled a pilot hole to attach it to the lid. A small notch is at the bottom of the "D", as a place for the brace to sit in…..couple of trial fits, to get the placements just right….so..
Wood Floor Flooring Composite material Gas

IF the lid should start to fall forward…it locks the brace in place…..chain is slack. Tilt the lid back until the chain is tight..
Wood Flooring Floor Composite material Plank

I can then unlatch the brace, and fold it down..
Wood Chair Hardwood Rectangle Flooring

As it will be out of the way, yet makes sure the chain fall into the inside of the chest. When you lift the lid all the way back, the brace then can swing up, and into place.

All that is left to do on this project, is to apply the finish…..and then post it in the Projects section.

Thanks for following along..
