start up

Well, been awhile. Rescued some old 2Ă—4s from the backyard, cut out the bad parts, and then resaw the rest.
Was a few boards, but not what I needed for this project. Seems the Boss wants a larger Pantry cupboard…..

Trip to Menards for a few boards. 4
Code:
 1 x 8 x 6', 3
1Ă—4 x 6', and a pair of 1Ă—10s by 6'. atched up the 1Ă—8s and glued them up into two panels..
Wood Fixture Rectangle Floor Hardwood

These will be the sides of the cupboard. The two skinny boards used to be one of the 1×4s. Bandsaw to rip 6' long board….Had to clean up one edge, though
Wood Tool Carpenter Lumber Machine

These will be the "stiles" running up the front edges of the side panels. I also needed two "rails" to connect the two stiles…
Motor vehicle Wood Automotive tire Wheel Automotive wheel system

Figured out I needed them to be 30", I marked out for two pieces on the second 1Ă—4. I will leave these two as 1Ă—4s
How to join these together?
Wood Machine tool Motor vehicle Gas Engineering

One way is to do a half lap. Cut away half the thickness of the mating boards. sometimes on the ends (top of the stiles) and sometimes in the "middle" somewhere ( 5" up from the bottom.
Hand saw to make a cut, a wide chisel to pop the waste off, then a plane and a paring chisel to finish things up.
Automotive tire Wood Tread Road surface Asphalt

Then do a dry fit ….
Wood Wood stain Hardwood Gas Plank

And check for any high spots. Got all four lap joints done. needed a way to help connect the sides to each other..

Decided to use two webframes, bot will be out of sight. Top one will also hold the cupboard's top, the second one will be near the bottom, right under the bottom shelf. need to rip a few more parts, using the last of the 1Ă—4s
Wood Lumber Machine Hardwood Table

I'll mortise and tenon the ends together. May add a middle strut to keep things from twisting.
Tools?
Wood Hand tool Bullet Ammunition Paint brush

Couple of squares, a wide chisel and a paring chisel. A block plane and a shoulder plane. Knife to do layouts with, mallet for moving chisels along. Along with that "new" Panel saw..
Hand tool Wood Tool Metalworking hand tool Gas

Had this backsaw for joinery work. Need those clamps taken off the panel. Top will also be a glue-up, using the one 1×10 x 6'. Which leaves me one more 1×10. Might find something to use it for…

Hey, it is a start…stay tuned.

Webframes....

Ok, part 2. Those 1xs with the sawn edges, they were smoothed out and jointed this morning….made a bit of a mess on the floor..
Wood Composite material Gas Flooring Metal

Wanted to get the parts as close to matching each other as i could. Laid out for some tenons to be cut on the ends of the short parts..
Wood Hardwood Gas Roof Metal

Again, I wanted all of these to match each other. Set up a jig on the bandsaw, and then reset for the rest of the cuts.

That "thing" sitting beside the tenons?
Wood Auto part Composite material Machine Hardwood

Is a mortise jig I use. Attached to the work bench, it will hold the part being mortised..
Wood Motor vehicle Tool Gas Machine

About the only clamp I need. Laid out a mortise, using the tenon as a guide. Backsaw to make a kerf cut at an angle. Chopped down at the far end, and pop the waste out..
Wood Gas Auto part Engineering Font

I can go back with a wider chisel and square things up…at least for a dry fit..
Wood Machine tool Hardwood Gas Composite material

Worked my way around all four corners, and another dry fit, and check for square..
Wood Gas Machine Composite material Metal

Mortise jig also doubles as an extra hand. While the frame was sitting like this, I could measure for a few "stiffeners", and cut them to length. A couple pilot holes, and a countersink..
Wood Bumper Machine tool Gas Auto part

Time to spread some glue around…
Wood Gas Building material Machine Metal

Bottom frame gets two stiffeners, as a shelf will go on top of it,,the bottom shelf of the Pantry. Top stiffener..
Wood Gas Machine Metal Building material

Top of the Pantry goes above this. Jig still helps out, holding things in place while I glue things up.
Wood Gas Bottle Machine Metal

Makes it easy to check for square, too.

Letting the two frames sit in the clamps, until the glue is dry. Need to make some room to work on the face frame. Need to go and buy a few more screws, too.
Maybe by tomorrow, I can do a little more assembly work…..if the back is willing. Stay tuned.

Top of the face frame while clamped up…..someday, I will have shorter clamps…Hard hat area! Test fit the top webframe, as well..

Down at the bottom, I did find a few shorter clamps….bottom webframe sitting there, out of the way….

Now the cussing can begin. One man shop, with barely enough room for my fat body…...and I am dancing around with this "thing" that is an inch taller than I am, and over 30" wide…..

Drilled a bunch of pilot holes, and counter bored them….some a wee bit too deep….Then, try to hold the face frame AND one side panel in place, long enough to glue and screw….then repeat for the other side…..did this "dance" twice….top frame and then flip this on to it's top, and add the bottom frame…
Wood Wood stain Beam Floor Hardwood

Nice looking up to do a little work? Then the bottom..

I am holding the webframe 3/4" down, to allow for the plywood bottom shelf. Top frame is flush with the top edge of the sides, so I can attach the top to it..
Wood Wood stain Wall Hardwood Gas

After attaching side 2 at the bottom, I could flip the case back onto it's feet…..and finish adding screws.
Wood Gas Art Machine Hardwood

Not a whole lot of room down here….
Table Wood Rectangle Floor Flooring

Even less went I set out a 1×10 x 6' plank, so I can measure for two pieces at 31" long…...

Next time I can get to the shop, I need to saw two lines, joint a couple edges, and glue up the panel for the top.

Need to buy a sheet of 3/4" plywood to cut into shelves and a back.
Stay tuned….

I find the lumber yard plywood will cup/warp. So I buy 2 sheets at half the thickness and glue them back to back and it solves the problem. It is extra work. You do need a bunch of small clamps around the edges and heavy weights for the middle or you could put in some temporary screws or pin nails to keep the sheets from sliding out of square on the glue. you can then buy AC or BC plywood. I also have the store use their panel saw to cut the sheets into quarters, because my shop is to small to handle large sheets. I trim the edges and square up the glue up with my old table saw if I need to. You can edge plane plywood. A scrub plane used with light passes is great for cleaning up excess glue, but be careful with softwood.

Just a quick catch-up…
Got the blank for the top out of the clamps. Laid it up on top of the case. Marked how much to trim off. Set up the jig on the bandsaw, and cut for width. Framing square to mark the ends square, bandsaw to trim. Cleared a BIG spot on the bench,,
Wood Flooring Aircraft Hardwood Metal

And used the Jumbo Jack to flatten both faces. Block plane for the end grain, and make a slight bevel to the edges. Took a quarter out of my pocket, and laid out a curve on the front two corners..
Table Wood Desk Floor Rectangle

Then used the beltsander to sand to the line. Used a drill to cut a few slotted holes in the webframe. Drill the hole, then rock the drill back and forth to make the slot. Slot goes in the direction the wood will move. Set the top on the frame, used a combo square to get the top centered, and added a few screws..

One screw is centered at each end, and two are in the front and back. It will hold the top centered, and still allow the wood to move.

Plywood for the shelves..

need to start cutting these to size….next time.
As for those screws I was going to get, before I stopped at a garage sale..

The one on the left I already had, the other two are the new ones.
Will need to cut the shelves for size, and make a bunch of cleats to hang them on. Next time.

Shelves getting installed

Things are moving along now. Managed somehow to clear just enough bench space to cut the first plywood blank into a few shelves. Shelves neede to be about 27-1/2" long, maybe 14" wide. Bottom shelf was done first, as the others will reference off of it.

Had a couple cleats cut to just the right length. Used those to mark the saw cuts. Framing square to connect the dots. That little saw was set to barely cut through the plywood. First one was cut, and installed..

( trying out a camera, to see how it works out..) Screws into the bottom webframe. Clamp to pull things into square. next, I added a couple cleats. I set them so the bottom of the next self is 14" above the bottom shelf…cereal box height.

Two screws into slotted holes, no glue. Framing square to make the lines level, and square to the front.
Next shelf (#2?) needed an extra cleat..

Along the back edge. Glued and screwed in place. Will give me a place to screw the back panel into.

Shelf is screwed down, into the cleat. Clamps are for a thin strip of pine I am gluing to the front edge of the shelf. The board I used to make the thin strip is now a clamping caul.

This is the third self. About all I got out of one panel. Need to make a few more cleats, before it is installed…as for the leftover from the panel..

Seems to be a good place for it. Might replace one of the workmate's jaws with it.

Got almost as much saw dust on my head as I have hair….time to call it a day. Waiting on a bit of glue to dry, and then make a few more cleats. Stay tuned…..

Shelves done, back is started

Ok, got all the shelves done.. even after having to fix a couple.. Shelf #2 and #3 needed adjusted a bit….right sides were a bit lower than the left, and #3 was the worst. Errors tend to add up faster than the IRS.

Once the fix was done, I added cleats for shelf #4 and #5…..that was the easy part. I used a box of Mash Potato Mix to set the heights of the cleats, and a framing square to to the cleats level front to back.

Today, I had to clear off the bench..

Added a couple stick to keep the plywood off the bench, don't want to cut into the top of the bench. Marked out for a cut..

This was one of the few spots where I could use the factory edge. Rest of the time, I had to measure three times, and the framing square to connect the "dots". Got out a saw guide for some of the cuts..

At one time, it was a "fence" made for a jobsite saw. Now gets used as a saw guide. I measure where the cut goes, add an offset for the bottom of the saw..

Almost like a track-saw? There is a cleat under the back edge, set to 90 degrees to the guide fence. A c clamp to hold it in place, and just hold the saw to the guide. Anyway, got two shelf panels out of the plywood panel, and a section for the back…a bead of glue on the cleats, a few pilot holes, and..
Shelf Wood Shelving Wood stain Hardwood

Blue line is another factory edge. need to rip a few strips to cover the edges….sometime. The plywood panel behind this case..

Became the top of the back. i'll cut the remainder, once this huge thing is out of my shop. need to cut down one more panel..
Wood Gas Machine Hardwood Engineering

Panel is 3/4Ă—36 x 48".....needs to be 3/4Ă—27-3/8'' x 48" will need a lot of room to make that cut. Then I can carry it up to the Kitchen, and install in to complete the back.

next up after that…doors. A glue-up of three 1×10 x 6', split the panel down the middle, and have the Stanley 45 cut a matching half lap to close the two doors. Then 6 hinges to hang the dang things….Boss gets to paint the entire thing. I merely hand her the brush, and head for the shop..

Stay tuned, the "FUN" will begin when the case starts up the stairs…. R. Lee Ermy…cover your ears….

One door done..

And one to go. Last weekend, I was away from the shop for a while. Had some tools to rehab. I went and got a few supplies for this Pantry Project. Turned out I needed a couple more items, more on that later.

Ok, plan was to rip one of the 1×10s right down the middle. Not enough room in the shop….6' board…cut it down to 5'1".....much better. Bandsaw to do the rip. Needed to cut another 1×10 to that 61" length. Joint an edge, apply a bead of glue, and clamp the narrow add-on to it.

This will be where the other half of that 1Ă—10 will meet up. Have to mill a matching lip on Door#2, later.

Decided today to install Door#1, just to get it OUT of the shop….I squared one end off, hauled the door upstairs to the Pantry…..test fit showed I needed to skinny the width down by 7/8" and trim the length by 3/8"....trudge back down to the shop, make the cuts. Needed to plane the glue lines, and joint the newly sawn edge. Had a few planes handy..

The two jointer planes are a Stanley No. 8 and an Ohio Tool Co. #0-7. The little plane is a #3 sized Millers Falls No.8. Needed the little fellow at one spot that the jointers just coasted over. I also used a block plane to ease a few corners. Hauled the door back upstairs to the kitchen. Opened a pack of "T" hinges….first two when on nicely..

BTW: Hinges? I thought I had bought 3 packages of hinges to give me three per side….hmmm, only found two?
Senior Moment? Now I need to go back and buy a pair of hinges, and hope they match the ones installed.

Maybe tomorrow, I can get Door #2 fitted? If the body is able to move, that is. I don't bounce as well as I used to.

Stay tuned, we are almost done with THIS project….
