The Light at The End of The Tunnel

My latest and distinctly proudest project: A self designed “Victorian Hat Rack/Table”.

It is inspired by a Victorian era gas lamp street light, and made for my niece Katie who, sadly, needs chemo due to Leukemia and has lost her hair. This table is entitled “The Light at The End of The Tunnel” to help her during her journey and to hold the many hats she wears (which is what the inlaid plaque on the front states). Of ALL the pieces I have made, I am most proud of this one.

I have a picture here of my little guy to give you an idea of the height of the piece (it is 21” square by 94” high). The light in the top is a flickering candle bulb to mimic an actual flame and it is made entirely of Sapele “Ribbon Stripe” Mahogany with bronze iron hardware.

Pole Screen Candle Stand

This was inspired by a pole screen from the Winterthur Museum.
The face of it is actually a mirror.
The fixed shelf is used to hold a candle and the light bounces off the mirror and reflects back into the room.

It is made from Sapele Mahogany with Wenge Feet.
The specialty hardware was procured from Londonerry Brasses.
The legs are attached to the center post using sliding dovetails.
The feet were shaped using the New Yankee Workshop method that was on the Tilt Top Table episode.

I have about 100 photos of the step-by-step process if you wanted to see anything specific on the construction.

Scrabble Table and Board

I built this Scrabble Table as a surprise for my sister for Christmas who is a word game fanatic.

The game board portion is made with a Mahogany Grid system to lock the tiles in place, while the border is Mahogany with Wenge banding. The tiles are made of Maple, and the Double Word, Triple Word, etc. were laser engraved and then dyed the same colors as an official Scrabble Board.

The board is mounted to the table below with a lazy susan so it rotates to face the player making his/her turn and also clears the letters sitting in the tile holders along the perimeter of the base.

The table base is made from Sapele Mahogany with Wenge laminated to the bottom of the 4-way tapered legs.
The table top has channels cut into it to hold the tile holders that I made from Wenge as well. They are removable from the table if the player so chooses.

I also made a “cover” for it that locks into the table with dowels. This allows for her to put pictures, or a lamp, or something on there when the game portion is not in use.
The cover has a double hinged (barrel hinges) lid for her to store the playing pieces in along with a pen/pencil and paper to keep score.

I can’t WAIT to give it to her on Christmas tomorrow. She will be VERY surprised.

I finished it by spraying General Finishes High Performance Satin finish and sanded between coats. Then, I applied a coat of Renaissance Wax to give is silky smooth finish coat.

Also pictured: My shop assistants. :-)

Thanks for looking, and Merry Chrsitmas/Happy Holidays to all!!!!!
