Welcome to LJ Arnold. I wish there were the resources available today when I was a kid. A scrollsaw is a good tool to start with. It teaches you attention to detail, it’s not as dangerous as other tools (tablesaw etc…), and with all the ideas you can find online you should be able to stay busy until you can afford another tool.
Nice work on your brother’s birthday gift! I look forward to seeing more of your work.
