I am getting ready to build a wookbench. Does anyone know where in Illinois I can purchase yellow pine? Thanks, Anes

First I would try a lumber yard, but all truss companies build trusses with yellow pine. Douglas fir should work or poplar, I built mine out of Maple. Actually it was an old bowling alley section. I bought from at local salvage company.

Silly question, but have you tried home depot and lowes? There is bins and bins of the stuff down here.

Check out one of the big boxes and start in the 2×10 and 2×12 section. They almost always have SYP in our (MO/IL) area. You’ll get better wood selection if you buy the wider boards and rip them down (which you’d generally have to do anyway to get rid of the rounded corners on 2×4 lumber).

It’s one of the first suggestions Chris Schwarz makes in his workbench book.

Wow, living in Louisiana I thought EVERYONE had yellow pine. It’s the most prevalent wood in this area – everyone sells it. What is the common wood in your area?
