Hey Andy your on fire here!

The japanese do something similar but a lot more brutal from memory, not to sure about the carsonagenic by products though.
I know fire damaged homes here in Aust get quarantined due to it.
I would have to get a expert opinion from a fire figher relating to the exact reasoning, maybe its plastic and furnishings, creating the hazard and not wood.
It certainy brings out the grain features.

Hey there Robert. The Japanese do a system for there exterior boards where they wire the boards into a triangle and set a paper on fire at the bottom. Like a chimney effect. Wood charcoal is actually a good cleanser for sore throats and infections. I have tried it. Bit crunchy though.
Once sealed with lacquer, there is probably more chance of harm from the off gassing of the finish coat. Good fun. I love the smell while burning it but only a small whiff outside.
Take care mate.
