Part 1: Just started cleaning up

05-18-2009 02:30 PM by alaskan79 | 3 comments »

My Father in law has 23 acres of woods and just started cleaning up all the down and dead trees in it yesterday. So far I have got 7 Hemlock logs that range in size of about 20 inchs in dia. to about 14 inchs. And the length of 12 feet to 6 feet. The reason I have a couple of shorter logs is the tree had a little crook in it, so have to cut the length there so I get the most lumber. Also cut a cherry tree but that is where things got a little interesting. As of this morning it it still hangin...

Part 2: Might of got a Curly Hard Maple log today

05-19-2009 05:24 AM by alaskan79 | 1 comment »

Today was mostly firewood but got one log that might be a Curly Maple. It is a little on the small size for a log but it had a lot of funny looking bumps and when I cut off a block from it the grains is going in a lot of different directions on the end from the chains saw cut. I only got a log 9 feet long and is only 10 inchs on the small end. If it won’t of had the funny looking grain I would of just cut it up for firewood. Henry

05-20-2009 03:36 AM by alaskan79 | 2 comments »

Today was a good day for logs. Got 3 nice Hard Maple logs the butt log is 20 inchs on the small end and is 13 feet long and got 2 shorter logs from the same tree that are each 10 feet long. Also got four cherry logs from the same cherry tree. The tree was dead and the sap wood had rotted away. It was still standing and when I cut it down it was in good shape. Also the same tree had a burl on it about 4 inchs square and I cut it off, it had some really wild looking grain. Looks like I might ha...

05-20-2009 10:15 PM by alaskan79 | 4 comments »

Well today had another Cherry that was standing that was dead. I cut it down and it was bad in the middle so I took off a couple blocks from the end. It then was sound so ended up getting 4 more logs from it. The largest one is 20 inchs on the small end and 8 feet long. Also knocked down a Hard Maple that the roots were out of the ground. I didn’t have time to cut the logs from it so I just anchorsealed the end for now and that is a project for a different day. Henry

Part 8: Got a couple of large Black Walnut Logs

04-25-2010 05:43 AM by alaskan79 | 2 comments »

The guy that my dad brought the saw mill from has a tree service. About a month ago he called me up to see if I wanted some Black Walnut logs. It didn’t take me long to say yes. The largest one is 34” across on the small end inside the bark and 8 feet long. The other large one is the next log up from the butt log. It should have some nice figure to it because it split into 3 at the top of it and the 3 small logs are from where it split. The guy that I got them from wants the 3 sma...
