Does, anyone have a good recipe to make poplar look like dark walnut. Just so you know I will be using a wiping varnish after I get the color right.

I did this end table all out of Poplar with just your standard minwax oil based stains from big orange store to get the look of havimg used two different woods. I have seen lots of suggestions since that say to use a pre-stain conditioner to avoid getting splotches.

Good luck

Dark stain plus several coats of home made spray-on stain (lacquer + Medium Brown aniline dye). Finish with your choice of varnish. Works like a charm.

Have your say...
