I Zachary Loizeaux Swain have been traveling all over the country for the past 8 years. I was born in NJ and have lived in Anacortes, Washington, Tempe Arizona, Santa Cruz, CA, and currently San Diego, Ca. Most recently I found myself working for a cabinet company name Kitchen Studios inc out of Lebanon, NJ. (Great company check them out on the web.) At first I was the shop grunt I had to sweep, take out trash, empty dust collectors, whatever the foreman could come up with. It wasn't long before I was given more responsibility, the foreman took me under his wing and showed me many awesome tips and tricks about cabinetry and woodworking . As my skills developed I was taught the trade of finishing. This is the painting and staining stages of the woodworking process. I was taught how to mix and match many different chemicals and colors to create one of a kind finishes for high end kitchens. One of my favorite being a six step finish for a country kitchen made out of tiger maple. Absolutely beautiful. Although finishing is a great aspect of woodworking to have knowledge in, 2 years of it began to wear on me . I couldn't take handling and being in a room full of dangerous chemicals hazardous to your health. So, In my spare time at the shop I began collecting all the scrap hardwoods being thrown out. The guys would use it as firewood, They'd laugh at me each time I told them to keep it for cutting boards or whatever else I was going to make out of it. Any chance I could I was out in the shop making something out of the scraps. The first thing that I made was a Mahogany Cherry and Teak end grain butcher block for my friends sister's wedding. To say the least the butcher block was a hit, everyone that I had talked to said I should be selling them. Low and behold after a lot of hard work and time dedication, comes the birth of ZLSboardworks a green minded woodworking shop specializing in end grain butcher blocks. Have a look around, tell me what you think, I love the feedback.
