I got hooked on woodworking 50 years ago in high school and have always been going to have tools to do some. I’ve gotten several of the tools and still add to that on occasion. I grew up in the Midwest but got dislocated to California. My family still has land back there so when I’m there I’m picking thru the woods. I have nearly 1000 bdft of black walnut and last deer season I realized that I was standing next to some storm damaged red oak. I have the logs at a sawmill right now and will have them sawed this spring when I can be there to stack them up to dry. There will be at least 1000bdft of that, too! I can’t wait to see it!

Welcome to Lumberjocks! That’s a serious wood gloat. How do you get the wood to California? Where in CA do you live?

I live in Modesto. Some seasons I drive back there for deer hunting. A couple of years ago came across Nevada in my half ton and about 1200# during white out snow. No problem. I even pulled a little spun out car back onto the road.
When I felled those trees, the big one didn’t want to fall! I had it very nearly loose and it didn’t move at all! It was nearly 40” diameter at the stump and still 30” at the top of the second log, 24’ up! The other tree was 32” diameter 6’ above the stump and I got two 8’ logs from it. Then I cut a 24” diameter tree also.
This makes you’re knees rattle!

I whittled out a flat screen TV stand from walnut last year.

Have your say...
