Just came back from seeing the movie Lincoln with Daniel Day Lewis.
Besides it being a very good movie with powerful performances, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful pieces of 150 year old period furniture in almost every scene.
Splendid examples of beautiful craftsmanship.
I love movies set in this time frame and my hat is off to whoever the set designer was.
Some wonderful pieces.

Projects of Necessity

Tackling some projects of necessity before taking time off in the shop for August.
Just too darn hot out there to really enjoy it.

I got a nice shelf tower finished today for my desk area to help store all the stuff that seems to accumulate
out of nowhere.

All pine, 10 shelf unit.
82” H X 12.5” D X 21” W
(The nice part of making your own stuff is that you can make the piece to fit just right in the space you want it in.)
The top, middle and bottom shelves are permanently attached in 1/4” dado’s and the other seven are adjustable on 2” centers, with 3/16 spoon pins.

All sanded and painted with white gloss porch/floor paint containing polyurethane.
I’m no painter but it dried real nice.
(My wife likes the little cloud features on the top…) lol

The upper rear rail was attached to a wall stud for extra stability.

I was going to do a project post on it, but what the hell, it’s just a shelf unit.

Thanks for looking & have a great day.

Bigger Shop

When you have 83 degree temperatures and sunny skies, you can expand your little shop quite a bit!

It definitely helps with light and dust control!
And the neighbors are great because they know if they need something, all they have to do is come on over.
(OK, except for that one neighbor lady who waves at me with “that” finger…
I call her Gladis Craviits.)

And, while I was doing some plant removal out front to start some new landscaping, my friends showed up to offer suggestions, and to grab a bug or two!
It’s eery at how they can silently just show up, as big as they are.

(throw them some bread crumbs and you have a friend for life!) lol

With most of the machines rolled out, there is plenty of room at the bench.
You wouldn’t believe how much time is spent sitting there just working quietly on a project listening to a ball game or the sports channel or NPR/BBC.
(Man, that is just what the doctor ordered!)

With most of the portable equipment rolled out, this allows me to get at some of the lumber stock better as well.
There is a TON more lumber stored behind the bench in a big dead space against the wall.

This is a shot looking out from the door to the utility room.
Dusty woodworkers are only allowed to come in through that door…lol
(Have to have my sports, celebrity and historical photos hanging in the shop naturally!)

And when play time is over, everything has to roll back inside.
It all fits nicely, and I’m always on the look out for an extra foot here or there to fit another machine.
Hey, I don’t drink, smoke or gamble, so I have to spend it on something ! LOL
The banner is for my home team, the Chicago Bears who have unfortunately taken it on the chin the last couple of weeks.

There are a lot of nicer shops displayed on our site, but this place is heaven on earth to me.
My wife who is the sweetest woman alive just can’t understand how I can spend ALL DAY out there and come in at night as happy as a lark.
I give her a hug and tell her that it’s just too hard to explain.
Thanks and have a great day.

This past week, I scroll sawed some ornaments to help out with the annual drive.
I’ll bring them to our meeting tomorrow night.
I used a bunch of different wood scraps I had, and just opened this and that can of finish.
(But it’s funny that I always come back to good old shellac.)

Fastner & Small Parts Storage

Hi everyone.

I was trying to figure out a way to store some of my fasteners and small parts which lead me to construct this.

Take some Dollar Store baking pans, some scrap wood, and a little routing, sanding & painting and problem solved. I then use my label maker to identify what is in each pan. I’m still sorting things out, but so far it’s worked great. You can take the one you need to your work area and bring it back when you’re done.

I don’t think it’ll win any design awards; in fact I think I remember seeing it in an old book some where.
But it only took an afternoon and was fun to make.
I’ve been doing work just outside the garage door because it’s been really nice out.

It takes up less then one square foot of bench space and can be built as high as you like.
I limited my to 27” because it’s going under a shelf over my bench.
