Garden Bench

Every year in May our little town has a Kiwanis “on air” radio auction to raise money for the Kiwanis club and I always make something for the auction, This bench was made for the 2007 auction and brought $135 for the club.
It is constructed of Poplar and is all mortis and tenon joinery. I sprayed it with Kilz exterior primer (oil base) and then 2 coats of exterior white oil based paint with an HVLP gun.

The initial planning consisted of going to Walmart and buying 2 clay pots….......the bench was built around the pots.
Gregg

Fireplace surround and mantle w/ asian flavor

Made from poplar with curly maple panels. The client has a beautiful home and she has decorated it in a modern design with a lot of asian influence in her art. Her instructions were for me to design something modern with an asian flavor for her fireplace mantle. This is what I came up with.
She really likes her furniture dark in color. The curly maple is washed out in the pics of the final product but in real life they pop nicely. She is very happy.
I am currently working on cabinetry for her home office and will post when finished.
Someone from lumberjocks has asked me to explain the finishing process in detail and I am planning to do a blog on here in the near future to explain my process. This project was dyed with NGR stain, then sprayed with a toner and finally stained with an oil base stain, before being sprayed with precat laquer.
The customer had a sample she wanted me to match and it was a tough one. It had so many undertones.
best of luck from Ky. ya’ll
Gregg

This one is just about 8 ft. tall.
I used bead board ply (see 3rd pic) for the panels in the doors and side panels of carcass. Constucted from poplar, poplar ply, and mdf. Counter is a beautiful piece of figured walnut.
primed painted glazed and then clear coated.

Poplar and Coffee Bean Table

Yeah I know it looks like red oak but it’s not. There has been a war in Ky. that dates back to the civil war about what is the state tree Poplar or Coffee Bean.
Every year our local Kiwanis club has a 2 day radio auction in May as a fund raiser. They ask local merchants to donate something for the auction. They came to me last year on Wed. evening and asked if I had anything for the auction which was Friday. I was holding onto this one Coffee bean board so I whipped up this table.
Aprons are attached to the legs with mortis and tenons. The tenons are pinned but from the back so you don’t see the pins.
I sprayed it with one coat of 50/50 precat and 2 coats of 75/25 precat

The table brought $125 at the auction for the Kiwanis club

The curved apron was made by bent lamination process, bandsawing into strips and then bending around a form. I made 2 of these tables and they form a circle when put together.
The finish is a hand rubbed oil finish, I can’t remember how many coats. I just kept putting it on till I liked the way it looked. each coat was allowed to dry over night and then rubbed with 4-0 wool
I just love combining walnut and curly maple.

I found a pic of this piece that I had taken just as I was getting ready to disassemble it and start the finishing process. I thought I had a bunch of pics of the construction process but I was wrong.
