This is a box I made for the Wallowa County Arts Festival here in Joseph in June. It was purchased for the permanent collection of Artists of the Wallowas Collection. The wood is spallted elm that I used on Richie’s Counter and Mary’s box. The handle is cocobolo with walnut stand offs.

Well this one is a couple of years old but I did win a second place ribbon at the Wallowa Arts Festival that year. The table is walnut that I picked up in Walla Walla Washington at Jensen’s Hardwoods. I tried to work with as much of the live edge as I could to still get the balance I wanted. The judge liked the fact I let the grain dictate the shape.

Locally grown Tamarack was used for everything including the transom. Made everything including the frame to hang the door, transom, and side lights. It replaces two solid core oar veneer doors. The last picture is the north side doors but I didn’t make the transom here and just added the center stile for the doors to close on.

I was fortunate enough to be there in person to give it to her thanks to my daughter Wendy. The box is bird’s eye maple and walnut with a hinged top.

I was inspired to make this stool after seeing an article in Fine Woodworking by Kintaro Yazawa. You can see lots more about this on Glue Tube The stool is make out of some teak I had left over from 44 teak doors I made for a job in Denver 25 years ago. So the wood was well aged.

This is a door a I made for a client here in Joseph out of locally grown Tamarack, all quartersawn. The hardware was owner supplied and cost almost as much as the door. None of the surfaces are flush. The rails drop down from the stiles, then the mid stiles drop down again then the solid panels drop down again.

A counter for Richie's Pizza

Ok it’s a pizza joint but I bet it’s the only pizza joint with a counter like this one. Frame is local Tamarack and the panels are spalted elm. All joinery is hand cut. the top of the frame is dovetailed together. The bottom is half lapped and the vertical members are through mortised both top and bottom. I wanted the knots and live edges to be the major feature of this piece.

This is a Xmas present I made for my partner Mary last month. The wood is spalted elm I had left over from a counter I made for Richie’s Pizza in Enterprise. First time I’ve tried doing splayed mitered dovetails and I like the way it looks. The handle is ebony and I turned the standoffs from maple. There’s more about this on my blog.
