I'm an amateur woodworker who got started as a kid by just playing around with scrap in the cold, dark and damp basement of the house I grew up in. My first real projects were created in my 7th and 8th grade industrial arts classes. We were fortunate to have a woodworking shop at our school. I didn't really do much with the hobby again until I was married and had a house with a bit of garage space to start setting up a shop, but had long been inspired by watching The New Yankee Workshop on PBS and a few other popular programs on HGTV.

Now I am fortunate to have a dedicated basement shop that's about 310 sq. feet and sound insulated --what a boost my efforts! I can't imagine going back to sharing space with a couple of cars. It is so nice to be able to work in a heated and air conditioned space.

I enjoy designing my projects as much as building them. One of the things I love about the hobby is being able to make custom pieces. I usually start out with an idea or a photograph and start sketching from there. Eventually I use CAD software to finalize dimensions and generate cut lists and cutting plans for sheet goods.

As with a lot of woodworkers, finishing is not my favourite aspect...but I've learned that good results come with patience and since I don't have a separate finishing room it forces met to give the shop a thorough cleaning now and then.
